IreneenteredtheUniversityofParisin1914toprepareforadegreeinmathematicsandphysics.WhenWorldWarIbegan,Irenewenttohelphermother,whowasusingX rayfacilities（设备）tohelpsavethelivesofwoundedsoldiers.IrenecontinuedtheworkbydevelopingX rayfacilitiesinmilitaryhospitalsinFranceandBelgium.HerserviceswererecognisedintheformofaMilitary'MedalbytheFrenchgovernment.
