GrangeHillisaBritishtelevisiondramaseriesoriginallymadebytheBBC.Theshowbeganin1978onBBC1andwasoneofthelongestrunningprogrammesonBritishtelevision.ItwascreatedbyPhilRedmond,whoisalsoresponsiblefortheChannel4dramasBrooksideandHollyoaks;othernotableproductionteammembersdowntheyearshaveincludedproducerColinCantandscripteditorAnthonyMinghella.

Plot

ThedramawascentredonthefictionalcomprehensiveschoolofGrangeHillinthe（equallyfictitious）boroughofNorthLondoncalled"Northam"（althoughwhenfilmingmovedtoLiverpoolin2003,itceasedtohaveanyspecificlocation）,andfollowsthelivesofthestudentsastheyprogressthroughschool.Theserieswastohaveoriginallybeencalled"GrangePark",whichwouldgoontobeusedasthenameoftheschoolinanotherRedmondcreation,theChannel4soapoperaBrookside（1982–2003）

GrangeHillwasoriginallyconceivedbyATVcomedywriterPhilRedmond,whofirstapproachedvarioustelevisioncompanieswiththeideain1975,unsuccessfully.In1976,hemanagedtoselltheideatotheBBC,andthedramaexecutiveAnnaHomegavetheseriesatrialrunofnineepisodes,thefirstbeingbroadcaston8February1978.[5][6]

Fromthestart,theseriescausedcontroversyforitsreal-life,grittyportrayalofschoollife,ratherthanthemoreidealisticschooldramasthatprecededit.Redmondhassaidthathewasn'treallyabletostartpushingtheboundariesuntillaterseries.[citationneeded]ThisledtoRedmondbeingsummonedtolunchbyBBCbossesandforcedtoagreethattherewouldbenofurtherseriesunlesshetonedthingsdown.GrangeHill'shighestprofileperiodwasundoubtedlythemid-late1980s.OneofthemostfamousstorylinesduringthistimewasthatofZammoMcGuireandhisaddictiontoheroin.Thisstorylineranovertwoseries（1986–87）andfocusedonZammo'sdescentintodrugsandhowitstrainedhisrelationshipwithgirlfriendJackieandfriendKevin.Theshow'sotherfavouritecharactersduringthisperiodwereGonchandHolloplayedbyJohnHolmesandBradleySheppard.Duringhistimeattheschool（1985–89）Gonchpartookinmanymoney-makingschemes,mostunsuccessful.Therewasacomedicelementtotheduo'srelationshipthatworkedwellwithviewers.ScripteditorAnthonyMinghella,whoworkedontheseriesforseveralyearsduringthe1980s,laterwonanAcademyAwardforBestDirectorforthefilmTheEnglishPatientin1996.

Duringthe1990s,GrangeHilldidnotreceivethesamemediaattentionitdidjustafewyearspreviously.Theteacherswerenowequalsinthenarrativewiththeirpersonallivestakingupalmostasmuchtimeasthoseofthepupils.In1994,twocharacterswereintroducedwithdisabilities,DennyRoberts（LisaHammond）,whosufferedfromdwarfism,andRachelBurns（FrancescaMartinez）,whohadcerebralpalsy.Bothcharacterswerepresentedas"oneofthegang"andhatedanyspecialtreatmentbecauseoftheircircumstances.ThispromptedtheBFI's2002publicationTheHillAndBeyondtocommentthatGrangeHillhadperhapsbecomepoliticallycorrect.[7]Beginningon4April1993,tocelebrateGrangeHill's15thanniversary,thefirstfifteenseriesofGrangeHillwererepeatedduringCBBC'sSunday,andlaterSaturdaymorningslotsonBBC1andBBC2.TherepeatsendedwithSeries16in1999.InterestinGrangeHillrenewedinthelate1990sandtheseriescelebratedits20thanniversarywiththeintroductionofsinisterScottishbullySeanPearce（IainRobertson）,whocarriedaknifeandslashedthefaceofafemaleclassmate.CastmemberLauraSadler,whowasheavilyinvolvedinthisstoryline,diedafterfallingoutofabuildinginJune2003;fouryearsearlierherGrangeHillcharacterJudiJeffreyswaskilledafterslippingandfallingoutofthewindowofaburningstoreroomintheschool.

By2001,theserieswasalmostentirelyissue-ledandthedecisiontotacklethesubjectofrapeupsetsomeparents.ButwhenPhilRedmondtookoverproductionofGrangeHillin2003,hisplanwastogettheshowbacktoitsrootsandtheissuesweretoneddownasRedmondskewedtheshowtowardsayoungeraudience.Inearly2006,itwasannouncedafilmofGrangeHillwastobereleasedinlate2007focusingonthelivesofformerpupils[8]buthasnotyetappeared.

GrangeHillreturnedon14April2008withitsfinalseries,includingareturnoftheoriginalthememusic.Series31returnedtoBBC1afterthe2007serieswasshownexclusivelyontheCBBCChannel.[9]

Foritsfirst25yearsGrangeHillwasproducedin-housebytheBBC,thentheshowwasmadeindependentlyforthecorporationbyLimePictures,theproductionhousefoundedbyRedmond（andformerlyknownasMerseyTelevision）,hencethereasonfortheproductionmove.

1978–85

GrangeHillwasoriginallyfilmedatrealschoolsinLondon.ThefirstofthesewouldbeKingsburyHighSchoolinNorthLondon,whichwasusedastheGrangeHillsettingforthefirsttwoseries.Fortheseries3,in1980,exteriorfilmingmovedtoWillesdenHighSchoolinWillesdenGreen,whichwassimilarinlookstoKingsburyandwasalsosituatedinaresidentialareaofthecapital.In1981,GrangeHillmovedtoHolbornCollege（nowFulhamPreparatorySchool）inGreyhoundRoad,Hammersmith.Thisschoollookedverydifferentfromthetwothathadbeenusedpreviously,anditwasalsoinabuilt-upareaofLondon.HolbornCollegewasthelongestservingofthe"realschools",remainingonscreenuntil1985.Uptoandincluding1985,studiosceneswereshotatBBCTelevisionCentreinLondon.TheschoolusedforfilmingGrangeHillisnowbeingre-usedasthesettingofHollyoaksHighSchool,theschoolintheChannel4soapoperaHollyoaks.

1985–2002

PopularrumoursuggestsGrangeHillwasforcedtomovebetweenrealschoolssooftenbecausefansdisruptedfilming.In1985,thisproblemwasresolvedwhentheBBCpurchasedtheformerATVstudiosinBorehamwood,Hertfordshire.ThestudioswouldbecomeknownasBBCElstreeCentreandfromSeries8,someexteriorfilmingwasswitchedtotheclosedElstreeset.A1960sofficeblock,NeptuneHouse,woulddoubleasGrangeHill's"lowerschool".

ThechangewasexplainedonscreenwithanelaboratestorylinewherebyGrangeHillmergedwithrivalschoolsBrookdaleandRodneyBennetttoformanewschool,GrangeHill.InSeries8themergerhadtakenplaceandGrangeHilloperatedasasplit-siteschool;theformerRodneyBennettbuilding（NeptuneHouse）beingthelowerschoolandtheoriginalGrangeHillbuilding（stillHolbornCollege）theupperschool.

InSeries9,theUpperSchoolbuildingwascondemnedafterafire,allowingproductionofGrangeHilltofullymovetoElstreeincludingstudiowork.GrangeHillwas,atthistime,madeasanoutsidebroadcastinthesamewayasitsstablemate,EastEnders.NewproducerDianaKyleswitchedfilmingtoasinglecameraformatfrom1999,atwhichtimeafilmiceffectwasalsoadded,tothedispleasureofsomefans.

Anewschoolentrancesetwasunveiledin1990andremainedinuseuntil2002,withcosmeticmodificationsalongtheway.[10]However,asthe1990sprogressedmoreusewasmadeofrealschoolsincludingtheNicholasHawksmoorSchoolandBusheyMeadsSchool,andStAudrey'sSchoolinHatfield.TheheadmistressofBusheyMeadsSchoolwassaidtobedelightedGrangeHillwasmovingtoLiverpoolin2002.

2003–08

Earlyin2002itwasannouncedthatGrangeHillcreatorPhilRedmondhadsignedadealforhisproductioncompanyMerseyTVtoproducethenextthreeseriesoftheprogramme.ProductionmovedtoMerseyTV'sstudiosinChildwall,Liverpool,fromSeries26onwardsandforthefirsttimeinmanyyears,theappearanceofGrangeHillSchoolitselfwouldchangeradically.Onscreen,anexplosionrippedthroughtheschoolattheendofSeries25andduringSeries26,tarpaulinscoveredmostofthenew"school"tomaskthe"firedamage".

PhilRedmondoriginallywantedchildrenfromalloverthecountrytoparticipateintherelaunchedGrangeHill,havingavarietyofregionalaccentsintheseriesasopposedtojusttheLondonareavoiceswhichhadbecomeassociatedwiththeprogramme.IntheeventnewcharacterswerealmostexclusivelycastfromthenorthwestofEnglandduetothelogisticsofthechildemploymentlaws.

RealschoolsinthelocalitywerealsousedincludingCroxtethComprehensive,HollyLodgeGirls'SchoolandStHilda'sCofEHighSchoolinLiverpool.[11]In2005,theformerBrooksideParadesetatMerseyTVwasredevelopedtobenefitGrangeHillandthenew"CreativeLearningCentre"hasbeenanintegralpartoftheshowsince.WiththecancellationofGrangeHill,theCLCexteriorsethasnowbeenturnedintoskateboardparksetforGrangeHill'sstablemateshowHollyoakswhiletheformerGrangeHillschoolfrontagehasnowbecomeapermanentexteriorforHollyoaksHigh.

Theprogrammehascoveredmanycontroversialstorylines,rangingfromstudentsthrowingbenchesintotheswimmingpool（1978;asaresultofwhich,followinglettersofcomplaintfromteachersandparents,theepisodewaswithdrawnfromtherepeatseason）,rape（2001）,heroinaddiction（1986）,Aspergersyndrome（2001）,knifecrime（1998）andattemptedsuicide（2005）,promptingmanycomplaintsfromviewers.GrangeHillbrokenewgroundbytheinclusionofagayteacher,MrBrisley,whowasinthecastfrom1992to1999.

In2005,thecharacterHollyParsonswaswronglyheraldedasGrangeHill'sfirstdeafcharacter.Whileitistruethattheactresswhoplayedher,Rebecca-AnneWithey,istheseries'firstdeafcastmember,GrangeHillfirstfeaturedadeafcharac
