Justgoingthroughanymotionswashardenough,butChristineWilliamswantedtoknowifsheshouldputonheruniformandhershoesandrunthroughthewoodsonanautumnafternoon,intheawfulgapingtimebetweenhersister’swakeandherfuneral.“Igotkindofupsetbeforehand.”Williamsadmitted.Notachatterboxundernormalconditions,shenowholdsherselfthebestwayshecan,thefewerwordsthebetter.Shealmostwalkedawayfromthestartline.ButherfriendAngelaToscano,whohadflownuptoBostonwithher,directlyfromthewake,wasstandingnearthelineandtalkedherthroughit.“Shesaidmysisterwouldhavewantedmetorun,”Christinesaid.Andthatwasenoughtogetherstarted.

TheaccidenthappenedjustaftermidnightonNov.4.FouryoungwomenweredrivinginanunfamiliarareaofLongIslandinEastport,N.Y.,whenoneofthemapparentlyranayieldsign,andthecarwashitbyanothervehicle.HeatherBrownriggandJenniferWilliamsdied,andtheirfriendsAprilBrownandKaciMoranweretreatedatahospitalandreleased.
