GRINDINGMACHINEFORTREATINGCONCRETE,TERRAZZO,STONEANDSIMILARSURFACES

Oneoftherecentdevelopmentsintheartcontributingtotheincreasingpopularityofpolishedconcreteandstoneflooringisthediamond-impregnatedpolishingpad.Theindustrialdiamondabrasiveincorporatedintothesepadsgreatlyincreasestheeffectivenessandtheefficiencyofthepolishingprocess,somuchsothatexistingfloorpolishingandgrindingmachinescannotfullyexploitthepotentialsofthesestate-of-theartpolishingpads.

Thediamond-impregnatedpolishingpadsaremuchmoreeffectiveandcapableofstrippingoffmaterialfromtheexposedsurfaceofconcreteandstoneflooringtoachieveaverysmooth,highluster,polishedsurface.Thediamondsinthepadscandigintotheextrudingsurfacematerialtoamuchgreaterdegreecomparedtoearlierpadtypesandcanstriptheextrudinglayerofmaterialoffmucheasiercomparedtopadspreviouslyavailable.Thediamondimpregnatedpadscanalsocontinuetoremovematerialmoreeffectivelyatagivensmoothergradeofpad（e.g.gritrating）andachieveasmootherfinishthanidenticallyratedpads.

Newerdiamond-polishingtechnologynowmakesitpossibletogrindandpolishconcretesurfacesatupto3000-gritfinishes.Thesefinelypolishedconcretefloorsareessentiallyno-maintenanceflooring.Removingallprevioustreatmentsandthenpolishingthefloorcanbeaone-timefixthatreducesmaintenancecosts,minimizinganyrequirementforexpensivewaxesorothercoatings.Afterdiamondpolishing,theonlymaintenancerequiredistheremovalofdirt,oils,andotherforeignsubstancesthatcanstaintheconcrete.

Currently,mostvendorsofstoneorconcretefloorpolishingservicesuseaconventionalsingle-padrotarybuffermachineoperatedbyasingleworkerwithadiamond-impregnatedpolishingpadattached.Suchmachinesarelimitedineffectivenessbecauseofthelimitedsizeoffloorareathatcanbepolishedandgrindedinagivenperiodoftime.Thelimitedsizeofthebuffer’spolishing“footprint”isbutonefactorinthelimitedefficiencyofasingleoperatorusingafloorbuffer.Thisinefficiencyextendsinlargemeasurefromaninabilitytofullyexploittheenhancedpolishingandgrindingpropertiesofthediamond-impregnatedpads.Also,theconventionalsingle-padfloorbuffercannotexertsufficientverticalforceontothefloorsurfaceforthepadtodigintoandgriptheuppersurfacelayerofthefloormaterialformaximumgrinding.Norcanaconventionalsingle-padbufferdevelopsufficientrotationalpowertostripofftheuppersurfacelayerofthefloormaterialtoasufficientdegree.Itisalsocostprohibitivetopolishaverylargefloorareatothedegreeofsmoothnessnowpossiblewiththenewertypeofpads.Moreover,ifaconventionalbuffermachinecouldfullyexploitthepads’potential,theforcesexertedagainsttheoperatorwouldbesuchthattheoperatorcouldnotcontrolthebuffer.Assuch,itisdifficultforanoperatortocontrolthebufferandachieveauniformfinishoverlargeareas,oftenleavinginclusionsor“swirling”visibleinsectionsoftheflooring.

Earliereffortstoimproveupontheabilitytoexploitdiamond-impregnatedpadshasusuallycentereduponmodifyingfloorscrubbermachinedesignsforuseinpolishingandgrindingconcreteandstonefloorsurfaces.However,sucheffortshavenotbeensuccessful.Suchmodifiedmachineslackthenecessaryrotationalpower,cannotexertoptimalverticalpressure,andcannoteffectivelydispensepolishingsolution.OnepriorartmachinespeciallydesignedforconcretegrindingandpolishingistheDraygonRGS50.TheRGS50isnotasatisfactorysolutionbecauseitfailstoadequatelydispensewaterorpolishingsolution.Itislimitedinitsgrindingwheelconfiguration,andtheamountofverticalforceappliedtothegrindingsurfaceisnotwell-regulated.

Thus,theRGS50hastroubleperformingthegrindingoperationwithoutleavinginclusions,swirling,orotherimperfectionsinthesurface.TheRGS50alsohasalimitedcapacityforwaterorpolishingsolution.

Thereremainsarequirementforamachinethatpossessessufficientenginepowertorotatepadswithsufficientrotationalforceandsufficientandregulatedverticalforcetodigintothefloorsurfacetoremovematerialtotheextentthatdiamondpadsmakepossible,tocoveragreatersurfaceareaduringoperationsuchthatitispossibletogrindandpolishfloorsurfacestoasuperiorsmoothnesswithgreaterefficiencyandatareasonablecost,andtoachieveauniformfinishthatisfreeofinclusionsorswirlpatterns.Thereisalsoaneedforamachinethatofferstheabilitytoquicklyandeasilychangepadsuponuseorfromacoarsetoafinergritrating.Thereisalsoaneedforamachinethatpossessesacenterli
