Potentialcandidatesmustpresentpapersstatingtheirintentiontoseektheirparty’srecommendation;delegatesthenchoosefromamongthoserunningsomemonthslateratthenationalconferences.Beforethat,however,eachstateholdsaprimaryelectionthatdetermineshowthestate’svoterswanttheparty’sdelegatestovote.Methodsofchoosingthedelegatesvaryfromstatetostate.Attheconferences,therearespeechesandoftenheateddiscussions.Itmaytakeseveralroundsofvotingbeforedelegatescanagreeonacandidate.Onthefinaldayofthemeeting,thepresidentialcandidateannounceshisorherchoiceforvicepresident.

Therulesforchoosingelectors,aswiththedelegates,vary.Eachstatealsodecideswhetheritselectoralvotesmustreflectthepopularvote.Thenumberofelectorsineachstateisdeterminedbythenumberofrepresentativesandsenators(议员)thatastatesendstoCongressand,therefore,maychangeevery10years,dependingontheresultsoftheUnitedStatescensus(人口普查).Thewinnermustgetatleast270oftheelectoralvoteswhentheElectoralCollegemeetsinDecemberoftheelectionyear.Theelectionresultsarenotofficial,however,untilthefollowingJanuary,whenCongressmeetsinajointconferencetocounttheelectoralvotes.
