Smallnon-recyclableobjectsthatareattachedtorecyclablesaregenerallyacceptable.Forexample,glueandtapeattachedtopaperwillberemovedintherecyclingprocesswithoutanytrouble.Butimproperlyrecyclingbrokeneyeglasses,plasticshoppingbags,foodwasteandgreasy(油渍)pizzaboxescouldcauseproblemstotherecyclingprocess.

Theobjectsintherecyclingbinaretypicallysortedbymachinesatrecyclingcenters,notpeople.Thesecomplexmachinesaredesignedtoseparateplastics,paper,andotherrecyclables.Ifsomethingisthrownintothebinthatshouldn'tbethere,itcouldendupdamagingthemachine,whichmeanstherecyclingcentercouldlosetimeandmoneyeverytimepeopledecidetowishcycle.Sometimes,anon-recyclableobjectisabletosneak(溜)pastthesesortingmachines.Ifthishappens,thenon-recyclableobjectendsupinaloadofrecyclablesthatwillbesoldfortherecyclingcentertomakeaprofit.However,havingjustonenon-recyclablethingmixedincanpollutetheentireloadofrecyclables,whichhastobethrownaway.
