WhenDavidCarterstartedtostudyartatTheUniversityofTexas(UT)atAustinin1971,hehadbigdreamsofbecominganartistorawriter.Buthisstudycametoastopat23afterhehurthishandinanunpleasantevent.Hedevelopedschizophrenia(精神分裂症)laterandspentmanyyearswithoutahome.

CarterlikedtospendtimearoundUT,becausehedreamtofbeingabletocontinuehisstudyintheuniversityandbecomingawriter.AfterrunningintoCartermanytimes,UTstudentRyanChandlerdecidedtointerviewhimforaprojectfortheDailyTexan,thestudentnewspaperofUT.

“IinterviewedhimonAustin’shomelessproblems.AfterIheardhisstory,wekeptintouchandreallybecamefriends.IlearnedhewantedtogetbacktoUT,soIdecidedtohelphim,”saidChandler.“Hehadgot87hours,veryclosetoadegree.Now,withchangingdegreerequirements,heonlyhas64hourstogo.”

WiththehelpofChandler,whoworkedwiththeuniversityoffice,CarterwasassignedanadviserbyUT’sCollegeofFineArts.“It'sthegreatestgiftI’veeverreceived,”Cartersaid.“Hedidwhathadtobedonetogetmebacktoschool,andIcouldn'thavedoneitwithouthim”
