Atthetime,thelongestofficialracesforwomenwereonly1.5miles.Manypeopledidn’tthinkwomenwerephysicallycapableofrunninglongerdistances.Runningamarathonwasalsoseenas“unladylike.”

Butthe23-year-oldGibbrefusedtoletgoofherdream.Shecameupwithaplantoruntheraceanyway.OnApril19,sheshowedupatthemarathonwearingherbrother’sshortsandasweatshirttohidethefactthatshewasawoman.

Gibbhidinthebushesnearthestartingline.Whentheracebegan,shejumpedintothepack.Shortlyintotherace,Gibbtookoffhersweatshirt.Tohersurprise,thecrowdcheeredwhentheyrealizedshewasawoman.Gibbfinishedtheracein3hoursand21minutes—fasterthantwothirdsofthemalerunners.

Gibbopenedthedoorforfuturefemalelong-distancerunners.Intheyearsthatfollowed,sheandotherwomenranintheBostonMarathon,eventhoughtherulesstillprohibited(禁止)womenfromrunningintherace.Finally,in1972,themarathonwasofficiallyopenedtowomen.
