《嘉莉妹妹》讲述了一位美国农村女孩到城市谋生最后成为名演员的故事,是一部具有较强思想性和艺术性的作品。
本书一经发表,便令美国文坛一片哗然。
众多评论家和读者指出,德莱塞的这部小说充斥着低俗与堕落的内容。
然而,随着女权运动的兴起,数年之后,嘉莉妹妹这个备受谴责的人物竞又成了19世纪后期的“新女性”典范。
本文拟从弗洛伊德的精神分析理论出发对作品进行重新诠释,在欲望与道德的对比中,深刻剖析主人公的内心世界,揭示嘉莉行为背后的内在动因,阐明嘉莉一系列选择的无奈和必然。

Abstract
SisterCarrietellsusastoryofaruralgirlwhoattemptstomakealivinginthecityandultimatelybecomesafamousactress.Itisamatureworkwithstrongfeelingsandartisticpower.Oncepublished,itfiredanoutcryinliteraryworldofAmerica.ManycommentatorsandreaderspointedoutthatDreiser'snovelwasfilledwiththevulgarfornication,andsexualdepravity..However,asthefeministmovementspringup,SisterCarrie,whicheverwasmuch-malignedcharacter,afterafewyears,becamethemodelof"newwoman"inthelatenineteenthcentury.ThispaperaimstoanalyzetheinnerworldoftheheroineandexplainthereasonwhyCarriedidsomuch“contemptible”thingsbyre-interpretingthenovelbytheuseofSigmundFreud’sPsychoanalysis.TheauthorofthethesishopestoillustratetheinevitabilityofCarrie’sdegradation.
