ItwasSaturday,soMr.Smithdidnothavetogotowork.Ithadsnowedheavilythenightbefore,andMr.Smith’ssonBobbyhadanewsledge（雪橇）,whichhehadbeenveryeagertotryoutforalongwhile.Therewasagoodslope（斜坡）inaparknotfarawayfromtheSmiths’house—aslopewhichchildrenoftenusedfortheirsledges,soMr.SmithagreedtotakeBobbythereinthecar.Theyputthesledgeinandwentoff.

Whentheyreachedthepark,theyfoundthattherewerealreadyalotofboysthere,eachboywithasledgeofhisown.Theywereslidingdowntheslopeatgreatspeed,andthenpullingtheirsledgesupagainforanothergo.

Mr.Smithstoodby,watchingthemwithasmile.Itwasobviousthateachandeveryoneofthemhadmuchfun.Afterafewmoments,Mr.Smithsuddenlysawamongtheboysakidwhowassmallandpoorly-dressed,anddidnothaveasledge.Thisboyhadflattenedoutoneoldcardboardbox,andwasslidingdowntheslopeonthat.Mr.Smithfeltverysorryforthispoorboy,anddeterminedtotellhissonBobbytosharehisnewsledgewiththeboy.

ButbeforehecouldcatchBobbytospeaktohim,hewassomewhatsurprised—andmuchmoredelighted—tonoticethatseveraloftheolderboysintheparkwerealreadyofferingthepoorboytheirnicesledges.Mr.Smithwatchedthemwithgreaterinterest—andsuddenlyrealizedthatthebiggerboyswerenotdoingthisbecausetheyfeltsorryforthepoorboy,butbecausetheyenjoyedridingonhiscardboardboxmorethanontheirownsledges.Theywereactuallywaitingeagerlyandimpatientlyforaturnontheflattenedcardboardbox!
