TheshortstoryTheLoonscreatesahalf-bredgirlbythenameofPiqurtteTonnerre.Shegrowsupunderharshcircumstancesinawhite-dominatedsociety.Thestoryistoldbyanothergirl,Vanessa.SheisPiquette’sclassmates.ButshejustknowsthatPiquetteisthedaughterofLazarus,whohastuberculosis.Piquette’ssicknessisalmosttheonlythingVanessaknowabouther.BecauseherfatheristhedoctorwhohaslookedafterPiquette.Piquettewasinvitedtospendthesummerholidaywiththedoctor’sfamilyintheDiamondLakeforthesakeofherhealth.Severalyearslater,VanessahappenstomeetPiquetteinacaféandshetellsVanessathatsheisgoingtomarryawhiteman,andfouryearslaterwhenVanessacomeshomeonherholiday,shelearnsthatPiquetteisburnttodeathtogetherwithhertwochildren.

Intheshortnovel,Piquettehaschangedherselfalotinordertofitinthemaincurrentofthesociety.

Asweknow,PiquettewasanMetiswhichisanancientaboriginalnation.Shelivesalifewithdiscrimination.Bytheendof19thcentury,thepeoplefoughtagainsttheinvasionofthefederalgovernmentprotecttheirlivingenvironmentandthesovereigntyoftheirterritory,buttheyfailed.Thewhiteculturebecamethemaincurrentofthesociety.Ofcoursetheywouldlivealifeofshameandhumiliation.PiquetteTonnerrewasFrenchhalf-breeds.AsaMetisgirl,shewasnotabletoownahappylifeandreceiveagoodeducationasherpeers.What’smore,shesufferedtuberculosis.Themiserablelifekeptheruncured,andalwaysbeabsentfromschool.Thesocialbackgroundcontributesalottohercharacter.ThoseprejudicesmadePiquettebecomeacoldandunsociablegirl.WhenthewriterwasspendingherpeculiarsummerwithPiquette,thegirlseemedtohavelittletosayandwasnotveryfriendlytothewriter.Thewriterdescribeher,“Shewassittingontheswingherlamelegheldstifflyout,andherotherfootscuffingthegroundassheswungslowlybackandforth,Herlonghairhungblackandstraightaroundhershoulders,andherbroadcoarse-featuredfaceborenoexpression---itwasblank,asthoughshenolongerdweltwithinherownskull,asthoughshehadgoneelsewhere.”Whenthewriteraskhertocomeandplay.Sheanswered,“Iamnotakid.”Thewritercaughteverychancetotalkwithher.ButPiquettealwaysansweredthewriter’squestionwithsimpleanddistantwords.Suchas,“sowhat”,“whogivesagoodgoddamn?
