ResearchersattheUniversityofAdelaide,inAustraliastudied13,800childrenwhowerebornatfull-term.Theyfoundthatthosewhoputon40%oftheirbirthweightinthefirstfourweekshadanIQ1.5pointshigherthanthosewhoonlyputon15%oftheirbirthweight.Thosewhoexperiencedthebiggestgrowthinheadcircumference(头围)alsohadthehighestIQsbytheageofsix.
“Headcircumferenceisanindicatorofbrainvolume,soagreaterincreaseinheadcircumferenceinanewly-bornbabysuggestsmorerapidbraingrowth,”saystheledauthorofthestudy,Dr.LisaSmithers.
