Chapter1Introduction

Thesaddessshowontelevisionisnotadramabutratherahalf-houranimatedcomedy.BojackHorsemanwasthebestshowof2014.Ibelievethatitcouldevenkeepthetopspotin2015.TheanimateseriestakesplaceinaversionofHollywoodinhabitedbybothhuman-likeanimals. 

WerarelyseesuchadeepandcomplexcharacterinTVcartoons.Hispersonalityisfullofincurableflaws,someofwhicharesofamiliarthatmanypeopleclaimtohavefoundtheirshadowinBoJack.Theseflawsmadehimathoroughly"slagman".Dianesaidinhisautobiography:

"Heissocleverthathecanseeallthefailuresandmistakesinhislife,butheneverwantstotakethestepstosolvethem."Butevenifhedidsomanybadthings,hestillwonusforgivenessandevencompassion.Thisispartlybecauseofhissoberunderstandingofhisguilt,andbecauseoftheshadowofhischildhood-tragicexperiencesthatseemtojustifyeverythinghedoes.

Freud'spersonalitytheoryismainlyusedinpsychoanalysis.Itisalsoappliedtothecharacteranalysisofthecharactersinthefilmandtelevisionworks.Byapplyingthistheory,wecanfundamentallydiscoverthecausesofcharacterformation.Andhegetstoknowyourselfmoreclearly,whichhasgreatpracticalsignificance.IusethistheorytoanalyzeBoJackHorseman,whowasborninanunhappyfamily,ashismothersaid,"Borntobebroken."Inordertowritehisautobiography,Dianerepeatedlyvisitedhischildhoodandhisparents.WhenBojackfinallywasreadytotalk,hedescribedhisparentsas:

"Theydrinkalcohol."Myfatherwasafailednovelist,mymotherwasthedaughterofthesugarbandSugarman,butmyfatherhatedher.HeusedtoletmecrywithhimwhenhelistenedtoBohr'srecord.HeaskedmetobuildmyowntreehouseanddestroyitwhenIwenttosummercamp,becauseIdidn'tuseapassionateChristiannail,butascrewthathecalledafancyJewishnail.

Thisnarrativepointstoadeep-rootedcontradictioninthebrokenfamily,whichishisfather'scareerfailure.Thefather'sfailurehasagreatimpactonBojack.Hisanxietydisorderandnarcissisticpersonalityarelargelyrootedinadeepfearofcareerfailure.Thecontradictionbetweenparentsisextremelyfierce.Thefathercheatedonhersecretaryandwenthomeandgotintoanendlessquarrelwithhismother.Bojackgrewupinthesoundoftheircursingandsmashingfurniture.ThefailureofmarriagetotheparentsofBoJackextremelydisappointed,theydonotwanttofosterthecrystallizationofthemarriage,eventheresponsibilityoftheirownfailuretopushtheBoJack`sbody. 

Therefore,thestudyofBoJack`sPersonalityinlightofFreud`sPersonalityTheyhasimportantsignificance:

 

(1)wecanknowcharacterimagemoredeeply.

(2)Bystudythischaracter,everyonecanseetheirshadowfromBoJack,whoalsocangetabetterunderstandingofourselves.(3)Histragedystemsfromhisunfortunatechildhood.Italsohaspracticalsignificanceforchildren'seducation.

1.1Freud'spersonalitytheorystudiesinChina.

LinJingpublishedajournaltherevelationofFreud'stheoryofpersonalitydevelopmenttohealtheducation(2001),whichwasamasterpieceofthestudyoftheinfluencewhichchildrenwereinchildhood.Freud'stheoryofpersonalitydevelopmentbreedsawealthofmentalhealtheducationideas.ThispaperbrieflyexpoundsFreud'stheoryofpersonalitydevelopment,andprobesintoitspositiverevelationtochildren'smentalhealtheducation:

first,tooptimizetheinitialenvironmentofpersonalityconstruction;Secondly,toestablishhealthypsychologicaldefensemechanism;third,advocatechildren'sgames,payattentiontoemotionalguidance.

1.2Bojackhorsemanstudiesabroad

Bojackhorseman:

thesaddestcomedyaboutahorse(2015)byLanPhillips.Thesaddestshowontelevisionisnotadramabutratherahalf-houranimatedcomedy.Bojackhorsemanwasthebestshowof2014.Ibelievethatitcouldevenkeepthetopspotin2015.Despiteplentyofcompetition.TheanimateseriestakesplaceinaversionofHollywoodinhabitedbybothhuman-likeanimals.Bojackisahorsewhowasalsothestarofa1990ssitcomHorsin`Around.Now,bojackisatired,drunkhas-beenwholivesinabigemptymansionwithnoonebutToddwhocallsbojack`scouchhome.

Afterhismemoir,ghost-writtenbyDianebecomesahit,Bojackisonceagaininthepublicspotlightandnowtryingforhisdreamroleassecretariat.Thus,seasontwostartswithamorepositivefeeling.Foranybodywohaseveliketheideaofanimalsactinglikehumans.ThenBojackwouldbelikeifanimalsactedlikehumans.

1.3Spaceforthisstudy

Freud`spersonalitytheorydissectsprofoundlyofthestructureofpersonalityanditsmovementwhichhassignificanttheoreticalvalues.Freudholdsthatpersonalityisadynamicenergeticsystem, whichis composed of three subsystems:

 the id, the ego and the superego, and the three interact and restraineachother.Oncepersonalityforms,itisinflux.Thefundamentalforceofpersonality,formationandmovementrootsinpsychicenergy.Distributionandmovementofphysicalenergyintheid,theegoandthesuperegoconstitutedynamicstateofpersonality,decidingwherepersonalitytogo.InaccordancewithFreud`slawsofconservationofpersonalityenergy.Therearetheid,theegoandthesuperego,whichcanhandledifferentamountofphysicalenergy,naturallypersonalitymovesindifferentdirections.Thus,peoplewillperformdiverse,evencontradictory,thoughtsandbehaviorsindifferentstages. 

1.4ResearchQuestionsandMethods

Accordingtotheabovetheory,thisthesisregardsBojack`scontradictorythoughtsandbehaviorsindifferentperiodsasmanifestationsofthemovementofhispersonalitysystemindifferentstages,andthereforeinterpretsBojack`spersonality.

Thispapermainlydiscussesthefollowingquestions:

4.1BoJack`sRepressedId

Asweallknow,wecanfindBoJackisobsessedwithmelancholyandheisaclassicalpessimistwhobecomesdisgustedwithlife.Aswehavetakenearlier,theidistheunconsciouspartofone`smindwhichconsisitsofnaturalinstincts,urges,drives,etc.itstrivesforpleasureandrequiredimmediatesatisfaction;otherwise,thestateofanxietyortensionmayoccur.

ThisdramastrikeourmindthatBoJack`sidisrepressedratherthansatisfied.IfyouwatchTVfurther,youcanfindthatBoJack`sidisemotionallyplaguednotonlybytheunhappychildhoodmemoriesbutalsobytheunharmoniousrelationshipwithpeoplearoundhim. 

4.1.1Bojack`srelationshipwithmotherandfather.

Theroleoftheindividual'schildhoodexperienceindetermininghis/herpersonalityisanimportantfoundationforthepsychoanalysisschooltoconstructitstheoreticaledifice.Freud'stheoryofpersonalitydevelopmentisbasedonthetheoriesofbiologicaldrivingforce,anditisbelievedthatindividualpersonalitycharacteristicsaregraduallyformedthroughthedevelopmentalstagesoftheoraldesireperiod,theanusdesireperiod,thegenitalstageandeventhesexorganstage.Ifchildrensuffersetbacksearlyintheirdevelopment--excessivedeprivationorsatisfaction--theirsexualpsychologicaldevelopmentwillbehinderedand"fixed"atthestageoftheproblem.Thisfixationwillallowthechildtodevelopintoadulthoodaftertheemergenceofacorrespondingpersonalitycharacteristicswiththedevelopmentphase.Freud'sDivisionofPersonalityDevelopmentwaslimitedtotheindividualsexualorganperiod,alsoknownastheOedipusperiod,whichlasteduntiltheageofsix.Theanalystlaterextendedtheperiodofpersonalitydevelopmenttoadulthood.

Butnomatterhowlongthisperiodlasts,wegenerallybelievethattheexperienceofchildhood,especiallybeforetheageof6,playsafundamentalroleinthedevelopmentofindividualpersonality.WeputoureyesonBoJack'schildhood.Themainproblemheencounteredduringthecriticalperiodofpersonalitydevelopmentwasexcessivedeprivation.Hewasborninanunhappyfamily,ashismothersaid,"Borntobebroken."Inordertowritehisautobiography,Dianerepeatedlyvisitedhischildhoodandhisparents.WhenBoJackfinallywasreadytotalk,hedescribedhisparentsas:
