mostabundant,peoplebelievedtherewasanever-lastingsupplyandilledthembythethousands,

Commercialhuntersattractedthemtosmallclearingswithgrain,waiteduntilpigeonshadsettledtofeed,thenthrewlargenetsoverthem,tainghundredsatatime.Thebirdswereshippedtolargecitiesandsoldinrestaurants.

Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswherepassengerpigeonsnestedhad

beendamagedbyAmerican’sneedforwood,whichscattered(驱散)theflocsandforcedthebirdsto

gofarthernorth,wherecoldtemperaturesandstormscontributedtotheirdecline.Soonthegreatflocs

weregone,nevertobeseenagain.

In1897,thestateofMichiganpassedalawprohibitingtheillingofpassengerpigeonsbutbythen,

nosiableflocshadbeenseeninthestatefor10years.ThelastconfirmedwipigeonintheUnited

StateswasshotbyaboyinPieCounty,Ohio,in1900.Foratime,afewbirdssurvivedunderhuman

care.Thelastofthem,nownaffectionatelyasMartha,diedattheCincinnatioologicalGardenon

September1,1914.
