ItseemedtobesuchacoincidencethatthenightafterIfinishedreadingTheLifeAndAdventuresOfRobinsonCrusoe,Iwastodineinarestaurantdistinctlyrelatedtothebookitself.ThisrestaurantwasnootherthanthefamousAmerican-styled“Friday’s.”Thereasonformentioningthisrestaurantisquitestraightforwardtoallthegentlemen,ladiesandchildrenwhohavereadthenovelandenjoyedit,whichisthefactthatthisrestaurantwas,mostlikely,namedaftertheAmericanNativeinRobinsonCrusoe,calledFriday.Thisrestaurantoffersveryexceptionalservice,forinstancewhenthewaitressesareaskedtoorderdishestheykneelratherthanstand,which,unliketheotherrestaurantsIhavebeento,makesiteasierforthecustomerstohearthemspeak.Moreover,Friday’sfriendlyservicestothecustomershelpthemtomakebetterchoiceswhenorderingdishes.IrememberedwhenIwenttoFriday’slasttime;thewaitrekindlydescribedtheitemsonthemenuwithprecisedetails.ItturnedoutthattheboIinitiallywantedwasdesignedtobesharedamongalargegroup,nottobeeatenbyoneperson.IthinkthisrestaurantshowsmanymendablefeaturessimilartothatofFriday.

Fridaybroughtemotionalwarmthtothepeoplearoundhimwithhisappealingpersonality.IthinkitwasthispersonalitythataffectedCrusoeandmadehimsaythathelovedFridaywhenCrusoedidn’texpreloveforhisparents,brothers,sisters,orevenhiswife.“Whenheespiedme,hecamerunningtome,layinghimselfdownagainupontheground,withallthepossiblesignsofanhumble,thankfuldisposition,ma-ki-ngmanyanticgesturestoshowit…toletmeknowhowhewouldservemeaslongashelived.”ThiswaswhatFridaydidafterCrusoehadrescuedhimfromthetwosavageschasinghim.ItwaseasyformetoseewhyCrusoehadlovedFriday.Aftersometime,CrusoeandFridayweretorescueFriday’sfather.WhenFridayreunitedwithhisfather,thescenewaseasytomoveanyone:

“ItwouldhavemovedanyonetotearstohaveseenhowFridaykissedhim,embracedhim,huggedhim,cried,laughed,halloed,jumpedabout,danced,sung;andthensungandjumpedaboutagain,likeadistractedcreature.ItwasagoodwhilebeforeIcouldmakehimspeaktome.”Thisismyfavouritechapterinthewholebook.ItishardtoseewhyFridayisanex-savagewhenhecanhavepersonalitiesmorepraiseworthythanmanycivilizedpeople,viz.Crusoehimself.“Whenhe(Friday)wenttohim(Friday’sfather),hewouldsitdownbyhim,openhisbreast,andholdhisfather’sheadclosetohisbosom,halfanhourtogether,tonourishit;thenhetookhisarmsandankles,whichwerenumbedandstiffwiththebinding,andrubbedthemwithhishands.”Furthermore,Friday’sexpressionofloyaltyinaskingCrusoetokillhimratherthanleavehimismoreheartfeltthananythingCrusoeeversaysordoes.

Crusoe,ontheabsolutecontrary,seemsincapableofdeepfeelings,asshownbyhisaountofleavinghisfamily—henevershowsanyemotions.AfteramovinglecturefromRobinson’sfatherabouthisfuture,hestilldecidedtofollowhisownwanderingambition.Carelewasheaboutthewishesofhisparentstokeephimaliveandprosperous,ashewastheonlychildleftinthefamily.Whenhecamebackfromtheislandwhichhehadlivedonfortwentyeightyears,hefoundthatithadbeentoolatetotellhisparentsthathewasstillalive,butyetagainhedidnotfeelsorryforthem;healsodidnotfeelsorryforthetwopeoplewhohadtoliveinmiseryfornearlythirtyyearsundertheallusionalloftheirsonsweredead.Hehadthesamefeelingsforhiswife:

whenhewasmarried,hesaiditwas“noteithertomydisadvantageordissatisfaction”,implyingthatitwasalsoneithertohisadvantagenorhissatisfaction.Moreover,afterhiswifedied,Robinsondidnotthinkoflookingafterthethreechildrentheyhad,butwentbacktotheisland,whichhehadlivedonfortwenty-eightyears.ItwasonthistripwhichRobinsonCrusoerevisited“HisIsland”ashecalledit.IfeelthatRobinson’sindifferencetohi.

Theotherdayhehadoneofhiselaboratewatchesstolenbytwoskilledteenagethieves,ArtfulDodgerandCharleyBates,andthoughtnaturallyitwasOliver,whowasanorphanandforcedtolivewithagangofthieves,thathaddoneitbecausehewastheonlyonenearbyafterthethefthadtakenplace.Beingwrathful,hecaughtOliver,andsenthimtothepolicestationwheretheill-tempered,unfairmagistratesworked.Fortunatelyforhim,Oliverwasprovedinnocentbyoneonlookerafterwards.Withsympathy,Mr.Brownlowtooktheinjured,poorOlivertohisownhome.ThereOliverlivedfreelyandgleefullyforsomemonthsasifhewereMr.Brownlow’sownson.Oneday,however,Mr.BrownlowaskedOlivertoreturnsomebookstothebooksellerandtosendsomemoneyforthenewbooksthathehadalreadycollected.ThethiefOliveroncestayedwithkidnappedhim.AfterthathedisappearedinMr.Brownlow’slife.Searchingforawhile,Mr.Brownlowhadtobelievethefactthathehadrunawaywithhismoney.Butdramatically,theycameacroeachotheragainafewyearslater.Withouthesitation,Mr.BrownlowtookOliverhomeforthesecondtimenotcaringifhehaddonesomethingevil.

PerhapsmostofuswouldfeelconfusedaboutMr.Brownlow’sreaction.Butasamatteroffact,thisisjustthelessonweshouldlearnfromhim.JesussaidintheBible.“Forgivenotseventimes,butseventy-timesseven.”Whyisthat?
