I.Introduction

1.ThisQuestionnairehasbeenpreparedinresponsetothedecisionsoftheFirstPreparatoryCommitteeMeeting（1stPrepcom）heldon17-18May2010whichinvitethemajorgroupsandotherstakeholderstocontributetothepreparatoryprocess,inter-alia,onexperiences,successfactors,challengesandrisks.ContributionsandinformationcollectedwillleadtothepreparationofaSynthesisReportwhichwillbediscussedatthefirstintersessionalmeetingscheduledtotakeplaceon10-11January2011.

II.ObjectiveandThemesofUNCSD

2.UNCSDisbeingorganizedinpursuanceofGeneralAssemblyResolution64/236.TheConferencewilltakeplaceinBrazilin2012ontheoccasionofthe20thanniversaryofthe1992UnitedNationsConferenceonEnvironmentandDevelopment（UNCED）,inRiodeJaneiro,andthe10thanniversaryofthe2002WorldSummitonSustainableDevelopment（WSSD）inJohannesburg

3.TheobjectiveoftheConferenceistosecurerenewedpoliticalcommitmentforsustainabledevelopment,assessingtheprogresstodateandtheremaininggapsintheimplementationoftheoutcomesofthemajorsummitsonsustainabledevelopment,andaddressingnewandemergingchallenges.Tothisend,thefocusisontwothemes:

（a）agreeneconomyinthecontextofsustainabledevelopmentandpovertyeradication;and（b）theinstitutionalframeworkforsustainabledevelopment.

III.QuestionnairesforProvidingContributions

4.SeparatequestionnaireshavebeenpreparedfortheobjectiveandtwothemesoftheConference（seeAttachmentsA-E）.Alistofthesequestionnairesisprovidedbelow.

Eachquestionnaireisdividedintotwoparts.Thefirstpartprovidesabriefintroductionwithregardtocurrentthinkingontheissuesembeddedineachobjectiveandtheme,whilequestionsforwhichcontributionsaresoughtarepresentedinpart2.Thesequestionsaregroupedunderexperiences,successfactors,challengesandrisks.

QuestionnaireswillbepostedontheUNCSDwebsiteinawriteableform.FocalpointsoforganizationsinconsultativestatuswithECOSOCorontheCSDrostercanrequestasecurepasswordfromthesecretariat（UNCSD2012@un.org）.Stakeholderswillbeabletoenterinformationontheirsecurelocation,submitcompletedportionsandattachmentsinrealtime,whilesavingincompleteworkforlatersubmission.

VI.InformationManagementSystem

9.IntheUNCSDpreparatoryprocess,theinformationmanagementsystemestablishedbytheSecretariatseekstoaccomplishtwopurposes.First,itcreatesastructurethroughwhichallStakeholderscanprovidetheircontributionsinatransparent,coordinated,andorganizedmanner.Second,itseekstocreateastructurethroughwhichallrelevantinstitutionsintheUNsystemcanparticipateeffectivelyduringtheprocessofReportpreparation.

10.Separatepublicpageswillbeestablishedintheinformationmanagementsystemforeverymajorgroupssector.Majorgroupsorganizingpartnerswillbeissueduniquepasswordstomanagetheirsector’swebpage.

I.Introduction

TheoverarchingobjectiveofUNCSDistorenewpoliticalsupportforsustainabledevelopment,assessingtheprogresstodateandtheremaininggapsintheimplementationoftheoutcomesofthemajorsummitsonsustainabledevelopment,andaddressingnewandemergingchallenges.

TheissueofrenewedpoliticalcommitmentwillneedtobeaddressedinthelongertermcontextofhowagreementamonggovernmentsandotherstakeholdersatUNCSDcouldhelpaccelerateprogresstowards,interalia:

（i）thedemographicgoalofstabilizingtheglobalpopulation;（ii）thedevelopmentalgoalofextendingthebenefitsofdevelopmentequitablytoallsegmentsofglobalsociety;and（iii）thedecouplinggoalofensuringthattheuseofmaterialsandgenerationofwastesiswithintheregenerativeandabsorptivecapacitiesoftheplanet.
