Today,therestoftheworld,Ithink,hasmuchtolearnfromChina。
It’salwaysstruckmethattheprocessofinventionisalittlebitliketheprocessofbeingacollegestudent。
Afterall,asaninventor,yougointoalabandyouhaveastrongbutperhapsvagueideaofwhatyouwanttoachieve。
Byworkinghard,experimenting,learningalongtheway,andusingasaguidetheworkofthosewhowentbeforeyou–youadvancedowntheroadtowardsdiscovery。
Youmaynotendupwhereyoustarted–orevenwhereyouexpected,butifyouaresuccessful,thenbeginsanotherdifficultprocessoftryingtomakeyourinventionworkintheworldaroundyou。

Iknowsometimesthatmightsoundstrange,becausewethinkalwaysofthedangersandchallengesintheworldaroundus。
ButIhavestudiedhistoryinmylife。
Idobelievethisisaneraofgreatpromiseandgreatopportunity。
Forthoseofyouwhohaveseenourads,youknowthattheyendwiththephrase,“everythingispossible。
”Acynicmightsaythatjustamarketingslogan–butIactuallybelievethat。
Idon’tthinkeveryiseasy,Idon’tthinkthingshappensrightaway。
ButIdothinkthateverythingispossible。
Foralltheremarkableadvancementswehaveseeninrecentyears,nothinghasmatchedthepowerofinformationtechnologytochangeourworldforthebetter。

Chinaispoisedtoplayahugepartinthatfuture–andthestudentswhograduatefromTsinghuaUniversityarepoisedtoshapethefutureoftechnologylikeneverbefore。
Nowlikeanyuniversitystudents,Iknowforyoutheroadaheadhasmuchuncertainty。
ButifthereisonethingIhavelearnedinthepast20yearsinthisindustry,itisthattheprinciplethatyouhavelearnedinsidethewallsofTsinghua,theprincipleismoretrueoutsidetheuniversitythaninside。
TheprincipleIamspeakingofisthis:
thatgreatleaders–likegreatorganizations,greatcompanies,andgreatnations–greatleadersaredefinednotsimplybytheircapabilities,butbytheircharacter。
Notjustbythecompanytheyare,butbythecompanytheykeep。
Notbysuccessalone–butasTsinghuateaches,withself-disciplineandsocialconcerninequalbalance。
Tobehonest,IwishIcouldsaythattheroadtolearningthatlessonformewaseasy。

ItooktoheartthewisdomofConfucius–whotaughtusthatoneshould“studythepastifyouwoulddefinethefuture”–andImajoredinmedievalhistoryandphilosophyatStanfordUniversity。
Asperhapsyoucanappreciate,thatofdegreewasnotingreatdemandwhenIgraduatedfromUniversity。

AndthereIlearnedaboutmarketingandoperationsandstatisticsandotherskillsnecessaryforbusiness–butperhapsmoreimportantly,Ihadprofessors–likethestudentsheredo--whochallengedme,whotaughtmeadifferentnotionofwhatwaspossible,whoforcedmetoseemylifeinnewways。
AndIthink,inaverygreatmeasure--thatiswhatleadershipisabout,thatiswhateducationisabout,thatiswhatcharacterisallabout。
Yousee,Ithinkoneofmostimportantqualitiesaleadercanbringistheability,theenergy,thedesiretounlockpotentialinothers。
Ithinkleadershipisultimatelyabouthelpingotherpeopleachievemorethantheythinkispossible;itisabouthelpingpeopleseeadifferentsetofpossibilitiesforthemselves。
I’vebeenaskedalotsinceifthereareanylessonsI’velearnedaboutcharacterandleadership。
Therearethreelessons,IthinkthatIhavelearned,thatcontinuetoinstructmetothisday,thatcontinuetoguidemeinbothbusinessandinlife。
Thefirstlessonisthatvaluesmatterandcharactercountsandthat。
Thefirstlessonisthatvaluesmatterandcharactercounts,andthatnomatterhowmuchthingschange,fundamentalvaluesshouldn’t。
Forthoseofyouwhoarejuststartingoutyourcareer,youwillfindthatinleadership—asperhapsinlife—themostimportantdecisionsyoumake,andthetoughestdecisionsyoumakeareoftenthedecisionsyoumakealone。
Andwhenyoumakethosedecisions,thereisanopportunitytobebuffetedaboutbyandconfusedbyallkindsofthings:
conventionalwisdom,andpopularemotion…andmaybebycynicismanddoubtaswell。
IthinkleadershiptakeswhatIwouldcallastronginternalcompass。

WhoamI?
WhatdoIbelieve?

Sometimesthat’sallyouhave。
ThesecondlessonI’velearnedaboutcharacterandleadershipisthatleadership,justlikesuccess,isnotajourney,itisadestination。
Itisperhapsaclichétosaythatleadershipisajourneynotadestinationbutitisaclichébecauseitistrue,leadershipisajourney。
Theonlyconstantinanyofourlives,whetheryou’rerunningacompanyorrunningafamily,orperhapsrunningacountry,ischange。

Itwillbebetweenthosewhoseektoleadchange,andthosewhofindrefugeinthestatusquoorintheircomfortzones。
AndthethirdlessonI’velearnedaboutleadershipandsuccessisthatrealpowercomesintheconnectionsbetweenallkindsofthings;butmostimportantlyrealpowercomesfromtheconnectionsbetweenpeople。
Powercomesnotfromthosewhostandalone,。
butfromthosewhocanworkbestwithothers,andreachouttootherstoachieveadesiredoutcome。
Andfindingthoseconnectionsandrecognizingthoseconnectionsispartofwhatleadershipisallabout。
Asleaders,youcanneverforgetthatpeoplewantto
