Thescientiststraveledonfoot,byfour-wheeledvehicles,boatandridinghorsesandtheyevenrodeelephantstoreachfarawayareas.Theycollected4,644seedsamplesof371wildrelativesof28crops.Manyofthosewildrelativesaresaidtobeendangered.

TheCropTrust,anonprofitorganizationthatworkstosavedifferentkindsofcrops,wasdirectingtheproject.ThegroupwasworkinginpartnershipwithBritain’sRoyalBotanicGardensandMillenniumSeedBank.AdditionalfinancialsupportcamefromNorway.Theprojectisbelievedtobethelargestorganizedinternationaleffortyettocollectandprotectcrops’wildrelatives.

Somerelativesofwidelygrowncropshavedevelopedsotheycansurviveusualandsevereconditionssuchaslowrainfall,flooding,extremetemperaturesandpoorsoils.Scientistssaythewildcropsofferalargelyunusedsourceofdiversityforprotectingcropsagainstclimatechange.

Somecropsarethreatenedbecauseofdestructionofforests,conflictandexpandedcities.Expertssaylosingthisdiversitycouldendangerfoodsecurityaroundtheworld.AUnitedNationsreportsaysthatfoodsuppliesareunderseverethreat.Thereportnotesthatthenumberofanimalandplantspeciesarequicklydisappearingastheworlddealswithhowtofeedarisingpopulation.

Theresearcherssaythenewstudy,publishedonlineinthejournalParticleandFibreToxicology,isbelievedtobethefirsttoexaminetheeffectsoffireworkexposureinhumancellsandlivinganimals,andtotestforparticlesofcommonfireworkmetalsthrownintotheatmosphere.

“Whilemanyarecarefultoprotectthemselvesfrominjuryfromexplosions,ourresultssuggestthatinhalingfireworksmokemaycauselonger-termphysicaldamage,ariskthathasbeenlargelyignored,”saysstudyseniorauthorTerryGordon,PhD,aprofessorintheDepartmentofEnvironmentalMedicine.

Gordonandhisteamalsoanalyzed14years’worthofairqualitysamplestakenatdozensofsitesacrosstheUSbytheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)throughouteachyear.TheyfoundthatlevelsofpoisonousmetalswerehigherinsamplestakenonIndependenceDayandNewYear’sEvecelebrationsthanatanyothertimeoftheyear.Alongwithlead,copperandotherpoisonousmetalsarecommonlyfoundinfireworks.“Ourresearchshowsthatalthoughweareonlyexposedtothesepoisonoussubstancesforashorttimeeachyear,theyaremuchmorepoisonousthanthepollutantswebreatheeveryday,”saysGordon.

Gordoncautionsthatthecurrentinvestigationisafirststep,onlyaddressingthepotentialeffectsofone-timeexposuretothefireworkmetals.Hesaysrepeatedexposureislikelyalargerconcern.Nevertheless,heisplanningtosharehisfindingswithlocalhealthofficials,fireworkproducers,theEnvironmentalProtectionAgent,andotherregulatoryagentstoalertthemtothepotentialforharm.
