HarrietBeecherStowe'sUncleTom'sCabinisananti-slaverynovel,butthisnovelisconcernedabouttheimpactofslaverytowomenandfamiliesandselfsacrificetofightagainstslaverysawellassavingtheworld.Inthenovel,thefemalerolesmostlyrelyonmeneconomically,butinthemoralleveltheymakemuchprogress.Thefemalecharactersarethedominantpowerandthesupportoftheirfamily,aswellasthespiritofsocialandmoralconstruction.Thisthesisanalyzesseveralgentlefemalecharactersandthereactionwhenwomensufferfromtheslavery.Atthesametime,thisthesisanalyzesseveralmalecharacters,whichareinsharpcontrasttofemalecharacters.Itexpressestheideathatfemaleredemptionisanessentialassetinthewayofsavingthesociety.

1.1HarrietBeecherStoweandHerWork
HarrietBeecherStowewasoneofthemostinfluentialAmericanwritersinthenineteenthcentury.Shebelievedinreligionandcaredthesocialandmoralissues.ShelivedinthefreestateofCincinnati,itwasfarawayfromtheslavestates,whatoneseesandhearsslaves’miserablelifeinslavery.Shehatedcrueltortureandevilofslavery.Shesupportedslaves’heroicstruggle.Peopleandeventsshehadexperiencedmadeherwritethehumblingnovel—UncleTom'sCabin.
UncleTom'sCabinisananti-slaverynovel,butitisquitedifferentfromthestory,whichisbasedonthesufferingsofslaves.HarrietBeecherStowecriticizedtheslaveryinthebook,atthesametimeshealsovividlydepictedwomen'stenderness,love,compassionandloyalty──loyaltytofamily,anddescribedthereactionwhenthefemalesufferedtheslavery.ItexpressedthebestwishesthatStowetriedtoarousewomen’ssympathyintheUnitedStatesandcalledforthemtoobjecttoslaveryandsavedthewholesociety.Bymeansofanalyzingthespecificfeaturesofwomenandcomparingthedifferencesbetweenmenandwomen,thisthesischoseseveralcharacters,bothwomenandmen,toanalyzethereflectionoffemaleredemptioninthisnovel.
DuringtheprevalenceofslaveryintheUnitedStates,thetragedyoffamilyseparationandfamilybreakdownoccurredintheslavepopulation.In1850theFugitiveSlaveActpromulgated,itrecognizedthatNegroslavesweretheprivatepropertyofslaveownersundertheformoflawintheUnitedStates.TheFugitiveSlaveActwascrueltoslaves.Itdidnotallowthewhitepeopletosaverunawayslaves.Whilewomen,asaleadingforceinthemoralspiritoftheirfamilyandsociety,werebornwithlove.Thiskindofeventhadagreatshockatwomen’spsychology.Forwhitewomen,theywereeducated,theyacceptedChristiandoctrine,andtheywerekeenlyawareofthecrueltyofslavery.Itwascontrarytothemoralpersonality,thisconsciousnessalsomadewhitewomeninthedilemma.Ononehand,theywantedtohelptheslaves.Ontheotherhand,itmeantthattheywouldtakeariskofviolatingnationallaws.Nevertheless,underthepenofHarrietBeecherStowe,whitewomenmostlyconformedtotheinnercall,sotheybecameapowerfulforcetosavetheworldandchangethesocial.
