Harrison,whocrossedthefinishlineat11:
45am,hasraisedover£37,000($47,800USD),farmorethanhisoriginalgoalof£1,790($2,300USD),fortheGorillaOrganization,whoseeffortsaremainlyspentinRwanda,Uganda,andDemocraticRepublicoftheCongo.

DrHarwoodandDrSalmelalabeledthebacteriawithacertaindye,tomakethemeasytotrack.And,sureenough,microscopeconfirmedthatPaenibacilluslarvaeweregettingintoroyaljellysecretedbythosebeeswhichhadbeenfedwiththesugar-water.Moreover,examinationofthisroyaljellyrevealedhigherlevelsofdefensivesubstance,comparedwithroyaljellyfrombeesthathadnotbeenmixedwithPaenibacilluslarvae.Thissubstanceisthoughttohelpbeeimmunesystemsfightagainstbacterialinfections.
Alltold,thesefindingssuggestthatnursebeesareindeed,viatheirroyaljelly,passingantigensontothequeen,thenintoeggs.Theyalsomean,becausetheyoungreceiveroyaljellyforthefirstfewdaysaftertheyhatch,thenursesaregivingtheyoungthesecondantigens.Eachyoungbeeisthereforebeingvaccinatedtwice.
