ManyvisitorstoChinaassociatetheGreatWallwithawidelyrestoredstretchofMingerawallatBadalingnearBeijing,butthisisfarfromtypicalofmostofthestructure.
Accordingtoa2014surveydonebytheGreatWallofChinaSociety,onlyabout8.2%oftheGreatWallisingoodcondition,with74.1%classifiedaspoorlypreserved.“TheGreatWallisavastheritage(遗产)site—over20,000kilometers—thusincreasingthedifficultyinpreservationandrestoration,”DongYaohui,deputydirectoroftheGreatWallofChinaSociety,tellsCNN.“Relianceonaverysmallamountofmanpowerbythelocalheritagedepartmentsisnotenoughtoguardandprotectthesite.”
Arecentincreaseininterestfromtouristsinvisitingwildsections,knownasthe“WildGreatWall”,hasaccelerateditsdeterioration(恶化),accordingtothereport.
