Tofindouthowthatapproachgoesdownwithrecipients,thepsychologistsdidanothertest,askingmorethan100studentstochooseasongoniTunestogivetoafriend,partnerorfamilymember.Eachhalfofthegroupreceivedthesameinstructionsasthecardbuyers.Resultsrevealedthatrecipientsofsongsthatrevealedsomethingofthegiversfeltclosertothemthanthosewhoreceivedgiftsboughtonlywiththeminmind.

HumanandAkninsuggestitmightapplytoallgifts.“Ifbuildingstrongersocialconnectionsistheunderlying(潜在的)goal”ofagiftandsurelyitshouldbe—thenwe“maywellbeadvisedtooffermoreself-reflectivegifts”.Inshort,forapresenttobemeaningful,youneedtogiveawayabitofyourself,evenifthereisariskthatthegiftmightnotsocloselysuittherecipient’spracticalneedsortastesasoneacquiredpurelywiththatinmind.

Moreover,givingsomethingofoneselfcanbeasaferact,thepsychologistsadded.Becauseitreducestheriskofrevealingpoorknowledgeofarecipientbyattemptingtobuysomethingthatfitstheircharacter—andfailing.
