东非大裂谷的形成在1000多万年前，地壳的断裂作用形成了这一巨大的陷落带。

板块构造学说认为，这里是陆块分离的地方，即非洲东部正好处于地幔物质上升流动强烈的地带。

在上升流作用下，东非地壳抬升形成高原，上升流向两侧相反方向的分散作用使地壳脆弱部分张裂、断陷而成为裂谷带。

张裂的平均速度为每年2厘米～4厘米，这一作用至今一直持续不断地进行着，裂谷带仍在不断地向两侧扩展着。

由于这里是地壳运动活跃的地带，因而多火山多地震。

东非大裂谷是纵贯东部非洲的地理奇观，是世界上最大的断层陷落带，有地球的伤疤之称据说由于约三千万年前的地壳板块运动，非洲东部地层断裂而形成。

有关地理学家预言，未来非洲大陆将沿裂谷断裂成两个大陆板块。

东非大裂谷分东西两支。

东支南起莫桑比境内西雷河口，向北穿越肯尼全境，一直延伸到西亚的约旦河岸，全长5800公里（一说6500公里）。

其中以肯尼亚境内的一段具有最显著的地貌特征。

这段峡谷长约800多公里，宽50－100公里，深450－1000米。

裂谷两侧断层崖壁陡峻，象筑起的两道高墙，谷深达几百米至2000米，高差悬殊。

首都内罗毕就座落在裂谷南端的东墙上。

茂密的原始森林覆盖着群山，无数热带野生动物生活在群山的怀抱中，一座座高大的死火山屹立在群山之中，在火山熔岩中蕴藏着大批古人类、古生物化石，是地质学、考古学、人类学的宝贵研究资料。

裂谷底部是一片开阔的原野，20多个狭长的湖泊，有如一串串晶莹的蓝宝石，散落在谷地。

中部的纳瓦沙湖和纳库鲁湖是鸟类等动物的栖息之地，也是肯重要的游览区和野生动物保护区，其中的纳瓦沙湖湖面海拔1900米，是裂谷内最高的湖。
