AdevicethatprovidesearlywarningofalandslidebymonitoringvibrationsinsoilisbeingtestedbyUKresearchers.Thedevicecouldsavethousandsofliveseachyearbywarningwhenanareashouldbeevacuated,thescientistssay.Suchnaturaldisastersarecommonincountriesthatexperiencesudden,heavyrainfall,andcanalsobetriggeredbyearthquakesandevenwatererosion.

  Landslidesstartwhenafewparticlesofsoilorrockwithinaslopestarttomove,buttheearlystagescanbehardtospot.Followingthisinitialmovement,“slopescanbecomeunstableinamatterofhoursorminutes,”saysNellDixonatLoughboroughUniversityUK.Hesaysawarningsystemthatmonitorsthismovement“mightbeenoughtoevacuateablockoffiatsorcleararoad,andsavelives.”

  Themostcommonwaytomonitoraslopeforsignsofanimminentlandslideistowatchforchangesinitsshape.Surveyorscandothisbymeasuringasitedirectly,orsensorssunkintoboreholesorfixedabovegroundcanbeusedtomonitortheshapeofaslope.Slopescan,however,changeshapewithouttriggeringalandslide,soeithermethodispronetocausingfalsealarms.NowDixon’steamhasdevelopedadevicethatlistensforthevibrationscausedwhenparticlesbeginmovingwithinaslope.
