YouDon’tNeedtoMeetEveryQualificationtoApplyforaJob

Ifyouarearecentcollegegraduate,chancesareyouhavetakenseveralclassesthatyoubelievewillhelpprepareyouforyourfirstjob.Unfortunately,mostofwhatyouneedtosucceedinyourworkinvolvesskillsyounevertookaclasstoacquire.Andthatcancomplicatetheapplicationprocess.

Whenyoulookatthequalificationsforentry-leveljobs,manyoftheitemsonthelistmaybethingsyouhavenotyetencountered.Evenwhenyournewjobinvolvestechnicalskillsthatwerecoveredinyourclasses,yourfutureemployerwilllikelyusetoolsyouhaven’tseenbeforeandrelyonprocessesthatgobeyondwhatyoustudied.

However,andthisisimportant,justbecauseyoudon’thaveallofthequalificationsdoesn’tmeanyoushouldn’tapplyforthatjob.

Organizationsexpectpeoplewhoarenewtoarole(andparticularlypeoplewhoarenewtoafirm)togrowintotheposition.Theywantnewhirestoaskalotofquestions,toseekoutmentoring,andtoevenmakeafewmistakesastheygetacclimatedtoarole.

Thatmeansthatyoushouldlookforpositionsthatwillstretchyou,notoneswhereyoucanalreadytickalltheboxes.

Unfortunately,manypeople(particularlywomen)focusonpotentialjobsforwhichtheyarealreadyoverlyqualified.Thereareupsidestodoingthis:

theywill“hitthegroundrunning,”whichoftenmakesanemployerhappyandcanboosttheperson’sself-confidence.Butit’sunlikelythejobwillleadtomuchgrowthandbeingstagnantinarolecanmakeithardtotransitiontothenextposition.Inparticular,anupwardtrajectoryintheworkplacerequiresconsistentacquisitionofthesetofskillsneededtotakeonthenextposition.Learningtheseskillswhenyou’reinapositionforwhichyouareoverqualifiedwillrequirethatyoulearn“offtheclock”ratherthanincorporatinglearningintothedailyperformanceofyourjob.

Butimpostersyndromeistypicallyafarce.Youcan’tseeotherpeople’sthoughtssoyoumayassumethattheyhaveahigherdegreeofconfidenceintheirabilitiesthantheyprobablydo.Becauseofthat,youdon’trecognizehowmanyotherpeoplehavealsohadtolearnsignificantnewskillson-the-job,andsoyoushyawayfrompositionsforwhichyoufeelunqualified.

Instead,it’svaluabletotreatnewpositionsasachallenge.ResearchbyCarolDweckandhercolleaguesdevelopstheconceptofagrowthmindset,whicharguesthatthebestwaytomaintainanorientationtocontinuelearningistotreatdifficulttasksasalackofskill(whichcanbeacquired)ratherthanalackoftalent(whichcannot).Organizationalpsychologiststheorizethatgrowthmindsetsalsoleadtoengagementwithwork.

Practicallyspeaking,it’susefulforalmosteveryonetotreatjobadsasthoughtheyareasetofguidelinesaboutwhatapositioninvolves,notastrictlistofrequirementsthatanyapplicantmusthave.Itisimportant,ofcourse,tohaveatleastsomeoftheskillsajobrequiresupfront.Butnobodyshouldlimitthemselvesonlytopositionsforwhichtheyarealreadyoverqualified
