8.2Typeofmultiplexing

Signalsaremultiplexedusingthreebasictechniques:

frequency-divisionmultiplexing(FDM),time-divisionmultiplexing(TDM)andwavelength-divisionmultiplexing(WDM).TDMisfurthersubdividedintosynchronousTDM(usuallyjustcalledTDM)andasynchronousTDMalsocalledstatisticalTDMorconcentrator.

Frequency-DivisionMultiplexing(FDM)

Frequency-divisionmultiplexing(FDM)isananalogtechniquethatcanbeappliedwhenthebandwidthofalinkisgreaterthanthecombinedbandwidthsofthesignalstobetransmitted.InFDM,signalsgeneratedbyeachsendingdevicemodulatedifferentcarrierfrequencies.Thesemodulatedsignalsarethencombinedintoasinglecompositesignalthatcanbetransportedbythelink.Carrierfrequenciesareseparatedbyenoughbandwidthtoaccommodatethemodulatedsignal.Thesebandwidthrangesarethechannelsthroughwhichthevarioussignalstravel.Channelsmustbeseparatedbystripsofunusedbandwidth(guardbands)topreventsignalsfromoverlapping.Inaddition,carrierfrequenciesmustnotinterferewiththeoriginaldatafrequencies.Failuretoadheretoeitherconditioncanresultinun-recoverabilityoftheoriginalsignals.
