Panel(嵌镶板)painting,commoninthirteenth-andfourteenthcenturyEurope,involvedapainstaking,laboriousprocess.Woodenplankswerejoined,coveredwithgesso(石膏)topreparethesurfaceforpainting,andthenpolishedsmoothwithspecialtools。
Onthisperfectsurface,theartistwouldsketchacompositionwithchalk,refineitwithinks,andthenbeginthedeliberateprocessofapplyingthinlayersofeggtempera(用鸡蛋、水等稀释的颜料或涂料)painteggyolkinwhichpigments(颜料)aresuspended,withsmallbrushes。
Thesuccessivelayeringofthesemeticulouslyappliedpaintsproducedthefinal,translucentcolors。
