Thisinventionpertainstoangularpowertransmittingdevicesandmoreparticularlytoadjustableangledrivetransmissionsforrotarypowertoolssuchasarotarypowerdrillforexample.

BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION

Rightangledrives,suchasgenerallyexemplifiedinU.S.Pat.No.2,620,840,arecommonlyusedinrotarypowerdrillapplicationstoconverttheaxisofrotationby90degrees.Rightangledrivesareusefulinanumberofsituationswhereitisdifficulttoorientormanipulatethedrillintoalignmentwiththeworkingsurfaceorwhereimpedimentsmakeithardforthedrilltoreachthedesiredlocation.Suchrightangledrivesarerelativelysimpleinconstructionandcanbereadilyusedwithallormostcommerciallyavailablerotarydrills.Rightangledrivescanbereadilyattachedanddetachedfromthechucksofrotarydrillstoallowforquickadaptationofthedrill.Theproblemwithrightangledrivesisthattheangleofsuchdrivesarefixedat90degrees.Eitheraworkmancandrillatastraightangle（0degrees）ortheworkmancandrillatarightangle（90degrees）,butnotanglestherebetween.Althoughrightangledrivesincreasetheergonomicsofdrillsbyprovidinganadditionalangulardrillingoption,theproblemwithrightangledrivesisthattheyarestilllimitedinthataworkmanonlyhastwofixedanglestoselectbetweenwhichinsufficientandundesirableformanyhardtoreachspotsorimpediments.Therearemanydrillingapplicationsinwhichvariousintermediateanglesofbetween0and90degreeswouldbebeneficial.

AnattemptatanadjustablepowertransmittingdeviceforadrillisdisclosedinGrech,U.S.Pat.No.4,332,147（Re.32,415）.ToApplicant’sknowledge,thisdevicehasnotmetwithcommercialacceptanceandisnotcommerciallyavail-able.Thereappearstobeseveraldrawbacksandimpracticalitiesrelatedtothisdiscloseddevice.Mostnotably,thisdeviceappearstorequirefasteningofthedevicetothedrillbody.Thus,thedevicewouldnotappeartobereadilyusablewithmanycommerciallyavailabledrillsandinfactwouldbelimitedtoonlydrillshavingsuitablemountingcapabil
