JohnWesleyPowellbecamefamousforhistripontheGreenandColoradoRivers.ItwasoneofthegreatesttripsofdiscoveryinthehistoryofNorthAmerica.
Johnwasbornin1834inNewYorkState.Whenhewasalittleboy,helearnedmanythingsaboutthenaturalsciences,philosophyandhistoryfromGeorgeCrookham,aself-taughtscientist.In1861thecivilwarbrokeoutintheUnitedStates.Johnjoinedthearmy.AtthebattleofShiloh,helosthisrightarm.
Afterthewar,JohnWesleyPowelltaughtscienceattwouniversitiesinIllinois.HealsohelpedfoundtheIllinoisMuseumofNaturalHistory.
From1867PowellledaseriesofexpeditionsintotheRockyMountainsandaroundtheGreenandColoradorivers.Powell’sfirsttripwasextremelysuccessful.Asecondtriptookplacethefollowingyear.In1869,PowelldecidedtoexploretheGreenRiverandtheColoradoRiver,whichhebelievedwouldprovideawealthofscientificinformationaboutthatpartofAmerica.
PowellgothelpfromtheSmithsonianInstitutioninWashington,D.C.TheSmithsoniangavehimscientificequipment.Hegothelpfromthearmy.Thearmypromisedtoprotecttheexplorersindangerousareas.Andhegothelpfromtherailroads.Therailroadsagreedtolettheexplorersridefreeasfaraspossible.
Thetripwasjustasdangerousasexpected,perhapsmore.Theriverswerefilledwithrocky(多岩石的)areasandwaterfalls.Oneoftheboatsbrokeintwoagainstabigrock.Theexplorerssufferedfromahotsunandcoldrain.Theylostmanyoftheirsupplies.Thetripthroughthegreatcanyon(大峡谷)wasfullofdangers.Yettheykeptmoving.Conditionsgrewsobadthatonlythreeofthemenwerelefttotrytofinishthetrip.
Thestoryofthebraveexplorerswasprintedinnewspapersalloverthecountry.JohnWesleyPowellbecameoneofthemostfamousexplorersacrosstheworld.
