TED演讲:

1000个快乐的理由

SotheAwesomestory:

Itbeginsabout40yearsago,whenmymomandmydadcametoCanada.MymomleftNairobi,Kenya.MydadleftasmallvillageoutsideofAmritsar,India.Andtheygothereinthelate1960s.TheysettledinashadysuburbaboutanhoureastofToronto,andtheysettledintoanewlife.Theysawtheirfirstdentist,theyatetheirfirsthamburger,andtheyhadtheirfirstkids.MysisterandIgrewuphere,andwehadquiet,happychildhoods.Wehadclosefamily,goodfriends,aquietstreet.Wegrewuptakingforgrantedalotofthethingsthatmyparentscouldn'ttakeforgrantedwhentheygrewup--thingslikepoweralwaysoninourhouses,thingslikeschoolsacrossthestreetandhospitalsdowntheroadandpopsiclesinthebackyard.Wegrewup,andwegrewolder.Iwenttohighschool.Igraduated.Imovedoutofthehouse,Igotajob,Ifoundagirl,Isettleddown--andIrealizeitsoundslikeabadsitcomoraCatStevens'song--

(Laughter)

butlifewasprettygood.Lifewasprettygood.2006wasagreatyear.UnderclearblueskiesinJulyinthewineregionofOntario,Igotmarried,surroundedby150familyandfriends.2007wasagreatyear.Igraduatedfromschool,andIwentonaroadtripwithtwoofmyclosestfriends.Here'sapictureofmeandmyfriend,Chris,onthecoastofthePacificOcean.Weactuallysawsealsoutofourcarwindow,andwepulledovertotakeaquickpictureofthemandthenblockedthemwithourgiantheads.(Laughter)Soyoucan'tactuallyseethem,butitwasbreathtaking,believeme.

2008and2009werealittletougher.Iknowthattheyweretougherforalotofpeople,notjustme.Firstofall,thenewswassoheavy.It'sstillheavynow,anditwasheavybeforethat,butwhenyouflippedopenanewspaper,whenyouturnedontheTV,itwasabouticecapsmelting,warsgoingonaroundtheworld,earthquakes,hurricanesandaneconomythatwaswobblingonthebrinkofcollapse,andtheneventuallydidcollapse,andsomanyofuslosingourhomes,orourjobs,orourretirements,orourlivelihoods.2008,2009wereheavyyearsformeforanotherreason,too.Iwasgoingthroughalotofpersonalproblemsatthetime.Mymarriagewasn'tgoingwell,andwejustweregrowingfurtherandfurtherapart.Onedaymywifecamehomefromworkandsummonedthecourage,throughalotoftears,tohaveaveryhonestconversation.Andshesaid,"Idon'tloveyouanymore,"anditwasoneofthemostpainfulthingsI'deverheardandcertainlythemostheartbreakingthingI'dever

heard,untilonlyamonthlater,whenIheardsomethingevenmoreheartbreaking.

MyfriendChris,whoIjustshowedyouapictureof,hadbeenbattlingmentalillnessforsometime.Andforthoseofyouwhoseliveshavebeentouchedbymentalillness,youknowhowchallengingitcanbe.Ispoketohimonthephoneat10:

30p.m.onaSundaynight.WetalkedabouttheTVshowwewatchedthatevening.AndMondaymorning,Ifoundoutthathedisappeared.Verysadly,hetookhisownlife.Anditwasareallyheavytime.

Andasthesedarkcloudswerecirclingme,andIwasfindingitreally,reallydifficulttothinkofanythinggood,IsaidtomyselfthatIreallyneededawaytofocusonthepositivesomehow.SoIcamehomefromworkonenight,andIloggedontothecomputer,andIstartedupatinywebsitecalled.Iwastryingtoremindmyselfofthesimple,universal,littlepleasuresthatwealllove,butwejustdon'ttalkaboutenough--thingslikewaitersandwaitresseswhobringyoufreerefillswithoutasking,beingthefirsttabletogetcalleduptothedinnerbuffetatawedding,wearingwarmunderwearfromjustoutofthedryer,orwhencashiersopenupanewcheck-outlaneatthegrocerystoreandyougettobefirstinline--evenifyouwerelastattheotherline,swooprightinthere.

(Laughter)

Andslowlyovertime,Istartedputtingmyselfinabettermood.Imean,50,000blogsarestartedaday,andsomyblogwasjustoneofthose50,000.Andnobodyreaditexceptformymom.AlthoughIshouldsaythatmytrafficdidskyrocketandgoupby100percentwhensheforwardedittomydad.(Laughter)AndthenIgotexcitedwhenitstartedgettingtensofhits,andthenIstartedgettingexcitedwhenitstartedgettingdozensandthenhundredsandthenthousandsandthenmillions.Itstartedgettingbiggerandbiggerandbigger.AndthenIgotaphonecall,andthevoiceattheotherendofthelinesaid,"You'vejustwontheBestBlogIntheWorldaward."Iwaslike,thatsoundstotallyfake.(Laughter)(Applause)WhichAfricancountrydoyouwantmetowireallmymoneyto?

(Laughter)Butitturnsout,Ijumpedonaplane,andIendedupwalkingaredcarpetbetweenSarahSilvermanandJimmyFallonandMarthaStewart.AndIwentonstagetoacceptaWebbyawardforBestBlog.AndthesurpriseandjusttheamazementofthatwasonlyovershadowedbymyreturntoToronto,when,inmyinbox,10literaryagentswerewaitingformetotalkaboutputtingthisintoabook.Flash-forwardtothenextyearand"TheBookofAwesome"hasnowbeennumberoneonthebestsellerlistfor20straightweeks.

(Applause)

Butlook,IsaidIwantedtodothreethingswithyoutoday.IsaidIwantedtotellyoutheAwesomestory,IwantedtosharewithyouthethreeAsofAwesome,andIwantedtoleaveyouwithaclosingthought.Solet'stalkaboutthosethreeAs.Overthelastfewyears,Ihaven'thadthatmuchtimetoreallythink.ButlatelyIhavehadtheopportunitytotakeastepbackandaskmyself:

"Whatisitoverthelastfewyearsthathelpedmegrowmywebsite,butalsogrowmyself?

"AndI'vesummarizedthosethings,formepersonally,asthreeAs.TheyareAttitude,AwarenessandAuthenticity.I'dlovetojusttalkabouteachonebriefly.

SoAttitude:

Look,we'reallgoingtogetlumps,andwe'reallgoingtogetbumps.Noneofuscanpredictthefuture,butwedoknowonethingaboutitandthat'sthatitain'tgonnagoaccordingtoplan.Wewillallhavehighhighsandbigdaysandproudmomentsofsmilesongraduationstages,father-daughterdancesatweddingsandhealthybabiesscreechinginthedeliveryroom,butbetweenthosehighhighs,wemayalsohavesomelumpsandsomebumpstoo.It'ssad,andit'snotpleasanttotalkabout,butyourhusbandmightleaveyou,yourgirlfriendcouldcheat,yourheadachesmightbemoreseriousthanyouthought,oryourdogcouldgethitbyacaronthestreet.It'snotahappythought,butyourkidscouldgetmixedupingangsorbadscenes.Yourmomcouldgetcancer,yourdadcouldgetmean.Andtherearetimesinlifewhenyouwillbetossedinthewell,too,withtwistsinyourstomachandwithholesinyourheart,andwhenthatbadnewswashesoveryou,andwhenthatpainspongesandsoaksin,Ijustreallyhopeyoufeellikeyou'vealwaysgottwochoices.One,youcanswirlandtwirlandgloomanddoomforever,ortwo,youcangrieveandthenfacethefuturewithnewlysobereyes.Havingagreatattitudeisaboutchoosingoptionnumbertwo,andchoosing,nomatterhowdifficultitis,nomatterwhatpainhitsyou,choosingtomoveforwardandmoveonandtakebabystepsintothefuture.

Thesecond"A"isAwareness.Ilovehangingoutwiththreeyear-olds.

Ilovethewaythattheyseetheworld,becausethey'reseeingtheworldforthefirsttime.Ilovethewaythattheycanstareatabugcrossingthesidewalk.Ilovethewaythatthey'llstareslack-jawedattheirfirstbaseballgamewithwideeyesandamittontheirhand,soakinginthecrackofthebatandthecrunchofthepeanutsandthesmellofthehotdogs.

Ilovethewaythatthey'llspendhourspickingdandelionsinthebackyardandputtingthemintoanicecenterpieceforThanksgivingdinner.Ilovethewaythattheyseetheworld,becausethey'reseeingtheworldforthefirsttime.Havingasenseofawarenessisjustaboutembracingyourinnerthreeyear-old.Becauseyouallusedtobethreeyearsold.That

three-year-oldboyisstillpartofyou.Thatthree-year-oldgirlisstill

partofyou.They'reinthere.Andbeingawareisjustaboutrememberingthatyousaweverythingyou'veseenforthefirsttimeonce,too.Sotherewasatimewhenitwasyourfirsttimeeverhittingastringofgreenlightsonthewayhomefromwork.Therewasthefirsttimeyouwalkedbytheopendoorofabakeryandsmeltthebakeryair,orthefirsttimeyoupulleda20-dollarbilloutofyouroldjacketpocketandsaid,"Foundmoney."

Thelast"A"isAuthenticity.Andforthisone,Iwanttotellyouaquickstory.Let'sgoallthewaybackto1932when,onapeanutfarminGeorgia,alittlebabyboynamedRooseveltGrierwasborn.RooseveltGrier,orRoseyGrier,aspeopleusedtocallhim,grewupandgrewintoa300-pound,six-foot-fivelinebackerintheNFL.He'snumber76inthepicture.Hereheispicturedwiththe"fearsomefoursome."ThesewerefourguysontheL.A.Ramsinthe1960syoudidnotwanttogoupagainst.Theyweretoughfootballplayersdoingwhattheylove,whichwascrushingskullsandseparatingshouldersonthefootballfield.ButRoseyGrieralsohadanotherpassion.Inhisdeeplyauthenticself,healsolovedneedlepoint.(Laughter)Helovedknitting.Hesaidthatitcalmedhimdown,itrelaxedhim,ittookawayhisfearofflyingandhelpedhimmeetchicks.That'swhathesaid.Imean,heloveditsomuchthat,afterheretiredfromtheNFL,hestartedjoiningclubs.Andheevenputoutabookcalled"RoseyGrier'sNeedlepointforMen."(Laughter)(Applause)It'sagreatcover.Ifyounotice,he'sactuallyneedlepointinghisownface.
