1Theworldthattoday’sHarvard’sgraduatesareenteringisaprofoundlydifferentonethantheworldadministratorslikeme,thefaculty,andallbutthemostrecentalumniofHarvardentered.
2Itisaworldwhereopportunitieshaveneverbeengreaterforthosewhoknowhowtoteachchildrentoread,orthosewhoknowhowtodistributefinancialrisk;nevergreaterforthosewhounderstandthecellandthepixel;nevergreaterforthosewhocanmaster,andnavigatebetween,legalcodes,faithtraditions,computerplatforms,andpoliticalviewpoints.
3Scientificandtechnologicaladvancesareenablingustocomprehendthefurthestreachesofthecosmos,themostbasicconstituentsofmatter,andthemiracleoflife.Theyoffertheprospectofliberatingpeoplefromdrudgeryonanunprecedentedscaleandofeliminatingdreadeddiseases.
4Globalizationismakingtheworldsmaller,fasterandricher.One-thirdofhumanbeingsnowliveinplaceswherethestandardsoflivingmayincrease30foldinasinglehumanlifespan—atransformationthatdwarfswhatwecalltheIndustrialRevolution.Still,9/11,avianflu,Darfur,andIranremindusthatasmaller,fasterworldisnotnecessarilyasaferworld.
5Ourworldisburstingwithknowledge—butdesperatelyinneedofwisdom.Now,whensoundbitesaregettingshorter,wheninstantmessagescrowdoutessays,andwhenindividuallivesgrowmorefrenzied,collegegraduatescapableofdeepreflectionarewhatourworldneeds.
6ForallthesereasonsIbelieved—andIbelieveevenmorestronglytoday—intheuniqueandirreplaceablemissionofuniversities.
7Universitiesarewherethewisdomwecannotaffordtoloseispreservedfromgenerationtogeneration.Amongallhumaninstitutions,universitiescanlookbeyondpresentnormstofuturepossibilities,canlookthroughcurrentconsiderationstoemergentopportunities.
8Andamonguniversities,Harvardstandsout.Withitsgreattradition,itsinternationalreputation,itsremarkablenetworkof300,000alumni,itsunmatchedcapacitytoattractbrilliantstudentsandfaculty,itsscopeforphysicalexpansioninAllstonanditsformidablefinancialresources,Harvardhasneverhadasmuchpotentialasitdoesnow.Thankstoyourgenerosityandtheendowment’sstrongperformance,ourresourceshaveincreasedinjustthelastthreeyearsbynearlysevenbilliondollars.Thisismorethanthetotalendowmentofallbutfourotheruniversitiesintheworld.
9SoIsaytoyouthatourUniversitytodayisataturningpointinitshistory.Atsuchamoment,thereistemptationtoelevatecomfortandconsensusoverprogressandcleardirection,butthiswouldbeamistake.TheUniversity’smatchlessresources—human,physical,financial—demandthatweseizethismomentwithvisionandboldness.Todootherwisewouldbealostopportunity,notonlyforHarvardbutalsoforhumanity.Wecanspurgreatdeedsthathistorywillmarkdecadesandevencenturiesfromnow.IfHarvardcanfindthecouragetochangeitself,itcanchangetheworld.

11Ponderthis.Withinthenext25years,itismorelikelythannotthatgenomicswillhaveledustowardsacureformanycancers;thatstemcellresearchwilltransformtreatmentofdiabetes,thatbasicresearchwillmakepossibleavaccineforAlzheimer’s,andthatwewillhavemeanstocontrolAIDSandmalaria.
12Drawacirclewithafive-mileradiusfromthispointandyouencompassthegreatestconcentrationofbiomedicaltalentonearth,and,almostasremarkable,theundevelopedurbanrealestatecapableofmakingHarvardtheworld’sepicenterofbiomedicalprogress.
13Recognizingthepotential,wehaveinthelastfiveyearscreatedaStemCellInstitutetofillthegapleftbyfederalpolicyandsoensurethatthisresearcharea—withitspromisefordiabetes,Parkinson’sandmuchelse—isfullyexplored.
14WehavelaunchedtheBroadInstituteforGenomicsincollaborationwithMIT,andembarkedonplanningandconstructionofmorethan20footballfields’worthoflaboratoryspacetobedevotedtointerdisciplinaryscienceinCambridgeandAllston.Wehaveexpressedourcommitmenttoscientificeducationinnewundergraduatecoursesthatcutacrossscientificdisciplines,andthatfocus,too,ontheeconomic,social,andethicalaspectsofscientificdiscovery.Andweareonthevergeofcreating,atlast,anewschoolforengineeringandappliedscience.
15Allthisrepresentsasignificant,andrapid,expansionofHarvard’spriorinvestmentinscience.ButthereismuchmoreforHarvardtodo.Weowetothenextgeneration,andtoourown,everyeffortwecanmake.
16IlookforwardtothetimewhenbecauseofHarvard’sboldinvestmentsanditsmagneticpower,BostonistothiscenturywhatFlorencewastothe15th—nottherichestormostpowerful,butthecitythatthroughitscontributiontohumanthoughtshonethebrightestlightintothefuture.

19AmericatodaymisunderstandstheworldandismisunderstoodintheworldinwayswithoutprecedentsinceWorldWarII.Agreatuniversitylikeourshasaprofoundlyimportantroletoplayinpromotinginternationalunderstanding.
20IknowthatmyownprofessionalpathwassetbythesummerduringgraduateschoolIspentinIndonesia.Thereisnosubstituteforlivingabroadifoneistounderstandanothercountryoreven,Idaresay,one’sown.ThenumberofHarvardCollegestudentsstudyingorworkingabroadhassharplyincreasedoverthepastfewyears:
nownearlytwo-thirdsofaHarvardclass—1,100students—willworkorstudyabroadthisyear.
21IlookforwardtothedaywhenHarvardsetsastandardforfutureleadersofourcountrybyassuringthatallstudentshavemeaningfulinternationalexperiencesbeforetheygraduate.
22Thereismuchmoretobedone,too,intrulyintegratingHarvardwiththeworld.Studentsfromabroadcomingheretostudyreturnhomechangedpeople,andthosetheymeetherearechangedbythem.RememberafewyearsagotherescueofadoomedRussiansubmarinecrew?
ThisrescuewasonlymadepossiblebyacontactbetweenaRussianadmiralandanAmericanadmiral—twowhoneverwouldhavecommunicatediftheyhadnotmetinaKennedySchooljointmilitaryprogram.
23Andyet,wearestillshortofrealizingthetrulygreatcurriculumourstudentsarewaitingfor.
24Ibelievethattorealizethiscurriculum,thefacultyofthecollegewillneedtoputindividualpreferencesbehindlargerprioritiesandtoembracenewstructuresandnormsofteachingandlearning.Toprovidethecloserstudent-facultycontactourstudentsdeserve,facultywillneedtotakeagreaterroleinleadingdiscussions,inrespondingtostudentwriting,inadvisingstudentconcentrators.
25Theywillneedtoprovidethebroadintroductionstolargebodiesofknowledgethestudentsarerighttodemand.Theywillneedtothinkwithvision,andwithgenerosity,acrossdisciplinarybordersandtheirparticularfieldstocraftacompellingdescriptionofjustwhat,inthe21stcentury,itmeanstobeaneducatedperson.IlookforwardtothedaywhenHarvardisnotjustthegreatestresearchuniversityintheworld,butisalsorecognizedforprovidingthebestundergraduateeducationintheworld—thedaywhenonceagainwhatwedohereinthisyarddefinestheidealofliberaleducation.

27Weoweittothosewhocomeafterustobecomeforthiscity,thisregion,thisnationandthisworldacenterofhumanimprovement.
