OnSeptember1,theBeijingNo.4IntermediatePeople'sCourtacceptedalawsuitfiledbytheChongqingGreenVolunteerLeague,anenvironmentalnon-governmentorganization(NGO),againstthecountry'sthreelargestfooddeliveryplatforms一BaiduWaimai,Ele.meandMeituan.TheNGOstatedthatthecompaniesfailedtoprovidecustomerswiththechoicetonotreceivethrowawayplasticutensilsalongwiththeirfooddeliveries.Meanwhile,theseutensilshavecreatedlargeamountsofrubbishandcausedseriousecologicaldamage.

Inresponse,bothMeituanandEle.me,whichacquiredBaiduWaimaiinAugust,havepromisedtotakemeasurestoreduceplasticwaste.Meituanannouncedthatitwouldappointachiefenvironmentalofficertooverseeenvironmentalissuesfromplasticwasteandupgradeitssmartphoneapptoprovideconsumerswiththeoptionoforderingfoodwithoutsingle-usechopsticks,spoonsornapkins.Ele.mefollowedbyofferingasimilarchoiceandputtingforwardaplantointroducesuppliersofdegradable(可降角军的)plasticutensilstorestaurantsinthelongterm.

Combinedeffortsbydeliveryplatforms,consumers,restaurantsandgovernmentdepartmentsarerequiredtoaddressplasticwastepollution.
