AustralianRulesFootballiscalledbymanynicknames.Loversofthegamejustcallit"football"or"footy."Whencontrastedwithotherformsoffootball,itiscalled"AussieRules"or"AFL".AFLstandsforAustralianFootballLeague,whichisthemostprestigiousleagueinAustralia.
AustraliaRulesFootballwascreatedbyTomWillsin1858.Hewantedtocreateasportthatwouldkeepcricketplayersfitthroughthewinter.Hebeganbywritingaletterthatexplainedhispurposetoasportsmagazine.Italsocalledforthecreationofafootballclub.In1858,WillsandothersplayedanexperimentalmatchthatwasthefirstgameofAustralianfootball.Butfewdetailsaboutthismatchhavesurvived.
OnAugust7,1858,twoimportanteventsforthegameoccurred.TheMelbourneFootballClubwasfounded.Itwasoneoftheworld'sfirstfootballclubsinanycode.Also,afamousmatchbetweenMelbourneGrammarSchoolandScotchCollegewasplayed.Itwasumpired（仲裁）byTomWills.AseconddayofplaytookplaceonAugust21,andthentherewasathirdandfinaldayonSeptember4.Thetwoschoolshavecompetedeveryyearsince.
