Foraprojectdesignedtofightrecidivism(累犯)(amongsomeoftheworstyoungoffendersintheUnitedStates),ithasasomewhatunexpectedtitle.ProjectPoochisnotthesortofnamedestinedtomakechildrensleepeasierintheirbedsatnight.

Theprojectgivesjuvenilemurderers,rapistsandarmedrobbersabadlybehaveddogtolookafterandseeifitimprovestheirbehaviour.

TheprojectatOregon’sMacLarenyouthcorrectionalfacilityhashada100%successrateincuttingreoffending.Intheperiodstudied,between1993and1999,around100youngoffendersagedbetween18and24caredforwaywarddogs.Sofar,notoneisbackbehindbars.

“I’mreallypleasedwiththesuccess,butI’mnotaltogethersurprised,”saidJoanDalton,whorunsProjectPooch.“Thesewerekidswhohadneverhadanyresponsibilityandweweretakingthemandsaying,‘hey,thisissomethingyou'reinchargeof,somethingyou’reresponsiblefor’.”

ProjectPoochtakesindogsfromlocaldogsheltersthathavebehaviouralproblems,suchasaggressivenessorexcessivebarking.Theyarethenpairedoffwithyoungoffenders,mostofwhomhavebeenconvictedofseriouscrimessuchasmurderandsexualassault.

Theyoungoffendershavetolookafterthedogssevendaysaweek,feedthem,walkthem,andtakethemthroughobedience(顺从)training,untiltheycanbegiventofamilieswhoarelookingforadog.

“Ithinktheprojectworksbecausethekidsseetheeffectthebadbehaviourofthedoghasonthemanditallowsthemtoseetheeffecttheirbadbehaviourhasonothers,”saidMrsDalton.“Youcouldreallyseethechangeinthekids,andthathasobviouslycarriedthroughwhentheyleftthecorrectionalfacility.”

Atthe10thInternationalConferenceonHuman-AnimalInteractionsinGlasgow,MrsDaltonsaidshehopedtheprojectwouldbeextendedtoothercorrectionalinstitutionsacrosstheUS.“Butfundingisabigproblem,”sheadded.

Itisnot,however,merelyyoungoffenderswhobenefitfromhavingadog----everyonedoes.

Petsmakeownershealthier

Accordingtoresearchunveiledattheconference,petownersvisittheirdoctorsbetween15%and20%lessthanpeoplewhodonotownanimals.Inastudycarriedoutamong11,000peopleinGermany,2,000peopleinAustraliaand1,000peopleinChina,researchersdiscoveredthatevenafterthingslikegenderandincomeweretakenintoaccount,petownersvisitedtheirdoctors8%less.

“Thisisthefirsttimeastudyhasbeendonewherepeoplehavebeenrepeatedlyinterviewedandithasreallybeenshownconclusivelythatpetownershavebetterhealththannon-petowners,”saidBruceHeadey,fromtheUniversityofMelbourne.“Idon’tthinkyoucangiveanysinglereasonwhypetownerslivelonger,butIthinkcompanionshiphasalottodowithit.”

Forpeopleintendingtoprolongtheirlifebybuyingagoldfish,however,thereisanoteofcaution:

thestudyonlyshowsconclusivelythatowningacatoradoghelpscutvisitstothedoctor.

Butanyonetakingthetroubletolookafteradogwhodoesfallseriouslyillmayfindanotherbenefittopetownership.

AstudyintheUSonpeoplewhosufferedheartattacks,revealedthatpetownersareuptofourtimesmorelikelytosurvivethannon-petowners.

ErikaFriedman,fromtheUniversityofMaryland,saidthatinherstudydogownershadasurprisinglyhighsurvivalratecomparedwithnon-petowners.

“Thereareanumberofstudieswhichshowthatinamoderatelystressfulsituationpetscanloweryourstressresponses,”shesaid.

“Wethinkthiscarriesoverintoeverydaylifeand,fordogowners,theirpetcanhelpthemstayaliveafteraheartattack.”

Butitisnotjustdogsthatrelievestress.InamoreanecdotalUKsurveycarriedouton500catownersagedover55bythecharityCatsProtection,mostcatownerssaidtheirpethelpedthemovercomestressandloneliness.

Perhapsmoreworryingly,some75%ofcatownersquestionedsaidtheypreferredcatstohumans.

DennisTurner,presidentoftheconference,saidtheresearchunveiledyesterdayrevealedthedependencybetweenpetownersandtheirpets.“Thehuman-animalbondhasindeedcomeofage,”hesaid.
