WallsandwallbuildinghaveplayedaveryimportantroleinChineseculture.Thesepeople,fromthedimmistsofprehistoryhavebeenwall-conscious;fromtheNeolithicperiod–whenrampartsofpoundedearthwereused-totheCommunistRevolution,wallswereanessentialpartofanyvillage.Notonlytownsandvillages;thehousesandthetempleswithinthemweresomehowwalled,andthehousesalsohadnowindowsoverlookingthestreet,thusgivingthefeelingofwanderingaroundahugemaze.Thenamefor“city”inChinese（ch’eng）meanswall,andoverthesewalledcities,villages,housesandtemplespresidesthegodofwallsandmounts,whosedutieswere,andstillare,toprotectandberesponsibleforthewelfareoftheinhabitants.Thusagreatandextremelylaborioustasksuchasconstructingawall,whichwassupposedtorunthroughoutthecountry,mustnothaveseemedsuchanabsurdity.

墙与墙建筑在中国文化中有着很重要的作用。

人们从朦胧的史前时期就有了墙的意识；从新石器时代开始使用夯土墙，一直到共产主义革命，墙都是所有村落的一个重要组成部分。

不止是城镇和村落；连其中的房屋和寺庙也筑起了墙，而且这些房屋没有窗户可以俯瞰街道，因此让人感觉徘徊在一个巨大的迷宫中。

在汉语中，城市的名字“城”意味着墙以及被城墙包围着的城镇、村落房屋和寺庙主导着的墙与山神，它的职责是且仍然是保卫和承担居民的福祉。

因此，建造一个跨越整个国土的城墙这样耗费极大劳动力的工作，似乎就不是荒谬的事了。

theCh’in,theChaoandtheYen,correspondingrespectivelytothemodernprovincesofShensi,ShanziandHopei,overandabovebuildingwallsthatsurroundedtheirkingdoms,alsolaidthefoundationsonwhichCh’inShihHuangDiwouldbuildhisfirstcontinuousGreatWall.

然而，人们普遍地将长城错误的认为是一种单一的建筑结构，并且错误的认为它是在一个朝代内建成的。

长城的建造跨越了几个朝代，这些朝代都对这座奠基于几个世纪前的建筑的翻新及建造作出了贡献。
