Introduction

Leanmanufacturingorleanproduction,whichbasicallyisoftenknownas"Lean",isthepracticeofatheoryofproductionthatregardstheexpensesofresourcesforanymeansotherthanthecreationofvalueforthepresumedcustomertobewasteful,andthusatargetforelimination.Inanutshell,morevaluewithlessworkandresource.

ManyofthekeyprincipleswerepioneeredbyHenryFord,whowasthefirstpersontointegrateanentireproductionsystem,underwhathetermed“flowproduction."FollowingWorldWarII,theToyotaMotorCompanyadaptedFord’sprinciplesasameansofcompensatingforitschallengeoflimitedhuman,financial,andmaterialresources.TheToyotaProductionSystem(orTPS),whichevolvedfromthisneed,wasoneofthefirstmanagerialsystemsusingleanprinciplesthroughouttheenterprisetoproduceawidevarietyofproductsatlowervolumesandmanyfewerdefectsthancompetitors.

TheeliminationofwasteisthegoalofLean,andToyotadefinedthreebroadtypesofwaste:

mudaitshouldbenotedthatformanyLeanimplementationsthislistshrinkstothelastwastetypeonlywithcorrespondingbenefitsdecrease.ThedisciplinerequiredtoimplementLeanandthedisciplinesitseemstorequirearesooftencounter-culturalthattheyhavemadesuccessfulimplementationofLeanamajorchallenge.

Whatislean?

Leanisaholisticapproachwhichrequiresdiscipline.Itisattentiontoeachlayeroftheleanphilosophy,itincludingthevaluestream,businessimprovementandappliedbusinessstrategy.

Theconceptofleanmanufacturingproductionhasadramaticevolutionoverthepastdecade.Ithaschangedfromanobscureandisolatedpracticetoamainstream.Thewellknownmethodologyisextensivelyusedthroughoutthemanufacturingandsuppliedchainindustry.Accordingtothereport,“36%ofmanufacturersareusingleanastheirprimaryimprovementmethodology".

Whatiscoreoflean?

Itisaculturalandpeople-orientedinitiative.Howtomakingthetransitiontoaleanorganizationisthemostfundamentalrevolutioninthecorporateculture.However,theapplyingleantools,thenewtechnology,andthenewbusinessprocessestoatraditionalsilo-orientedculturewillnothelpwithit.

Theleanisdiscussedaboutwhetheritisthetoolsandprocesses,orthepeoplemakingleanworkinrealityitisboth.

Onedepartmentpreferstouseandadoptingofthelean,suchasmanufacturingproductioncontrol,itmakesaleaninitiativemosteffective.

Howitworks?

TheLeanManufacturingoffersasuiteoftoolsthatsupportsbothleanmanufacturingandflowschedulingpracticesforproduction,replenishmentandinventory.

Itbringsuserstheabilitytocloselymanageinventorythroughoutthevaluestream.Inordertoprovidecompletefunctionality,afterthatitestablishesandexecutesprocessestoimplementeffectivepullsystems,whicharebothinsidethemanufacturingplantandwithsuppliers.

TheLeanmanufacturingusesalreadyexistdatawhichisintheenterprisetomodelthemostcomplexvaluestreams.Avalue-streammapcanbeusedtocreateamodelofsuppliers,manufacturingprocessesandflows,supermarketsandcustomers.Italsocanbeestablishedandlevelsvisiblycommunicatedthroughoutthesupplychain.
