OnEasterSunday1722,aDutchexplorernamedJacobRoggeveenwasthefirstEuropeantoseeEasterIsland.TheearlyPolynesianscarvedthestatueswithintheholesofthevolcanousingonlystonetools.Thentheymovedthesehugestatuestovariousdestinationsthroughouttheisland.These600statuesrangeinheightfrom10to40feet.Someofthemweighasmuchas50tons.HowcouldtheearlyPolynesianslifthundredsofheavystatuesoutofthevolcano?
