  AmericanliteraturebeginswithAmericanexperiences.Longbeforethefirstcolonistsarrived,beforeChristopherColumbus,beforetheNorthmenwhofoundAmericaaboutyear1,000,NativeAmericanslivedhere.Eachtribe'sliteraturewastightlywovenintothefabricofdailylifeandreflectedtheunmistakablyAmericanexperienceofliningwiththeland.Anotherkindofexperience,onefilledwithfearandexcitement,founditsexpressioninthereportsthatColumbusandotherexplorerssenthomeinSpain,FrenchandEnglish.Inaddition,thejournalsofthepeoplewholivedanddiedintheNewEnglandwilderness'tellunforgettabletalesofhardendsometimesheartbreakingexperiencesofthoseearlyyears.
