WilliamShakespeare(JosephFiennes)isapoorplaywrightforPhilipHenslowe(GeoffreyRush),ownerofTheRoseTheatre,in1593London.Afterlearningthathislovewascheatingonhimwithhispatron,Shakespeareburnshisnewcomedy,RomeoandEthel,thePirate'sDaughter,rewritingitasthetragedyRomeoandJuliet.Sufferingfromwriter'sblock,heisunabletocompletetheplay,butbeginsauditionsforRomeo.AyoungmannamedThomasKentiscastintheroleafterimpressingShakespearewithhisperformanceandhisloveofShakespeare'spreviouswork.KentisactuallyVioladeLesseps(GwynethPaltrow),thedaughterofawealthymerchantwhodesirestoact,butwomenarebannedfromthestageandshemustdisguiseherself.

AfterShakespearediscovershisstar'strueidentity,heandViolabeginapassionatesecretaffair.Inspiredbyher,Shakespearewritesquickly,andbenefitsfromtheadviceofplaywrightandfriendlyrivalChristopher'Kit'Marlowe(RupertEverett).ShakespeareandViolaknow,however,thattheirromanceisdoomed.Heismarried,albeitlongseparatedfromhiswife,whileViola'sparentshavearrangedherbetrothaltoLordWessex(ColinFirth),anaristocratwhoneedsmoney.WhenViolaissummonedtothecourtofQueenElizabethI(JudiDench),Shakespearedonsawoman'sdisguisetoaccompanyherashercousin.Atcourt,hepersuadesWessextobet£50thataplaycannotcapturethenatureoftruelove.IfRomeoandJulietisasuccess,Shakespeareasplaywrightwillwinthemoney.TheQueen,whoenjoysShakespeare'splays,agreestowitnessthewager.

EdmundTilney(SimonCallow),theMasteroftheRevels,theQueen'sofficialinchargeofthetheatres,learnsthatthereisawomaninthetheatrecompanyatTheRoseplayhouse,andordersthetheatreclosedforviolatingmoralityandthelaw.Leftwithoutastageorleadactor,itseemsthatRomeoandJulietmustclosebeforeitevenopens,untilRichardBurbage(MartinClunes),theownerofacompetingtheatre,theCurtain,offershisstagetoShakespeare.ShakespeareassumestheleadroleofRomeo,withaboyactorplayingJuliet.Violalearnsthattheplaywillbeperformedonherweddingday,andaftertheceremonysecretlytravelstothetheatre.Shortlybeforetheplaybegins,theboyplayingJulietstartsexperiencingthevoicechangeofpuberty.ViolareplaceshimandplaysJuliettoShakespeare'sRomeo.Theirpassionateportrayaloftwoloversinspirestheentireaudience.

TilneyarrivesatthetheatrewithWessex,whohasdeducedhisnewbride'slocation.Tilneyplanstoarresttheaudienceandcastforindecency,buttheQueenisinattendance.AlthoughsherecognizesViola,theQueendoesnotunmaskher,insteaddeclaringthattheroleofJulietisbeingperformedbyThomasKent.However,evenaqueenispowerlesstoendalawfulmarriage,sosheorders"Kent"tofetchViolasothatshemaysailwithWessextotheColonyofVirginia.TheQueenalsostatesthatRomeoandJuliethasaccuratelyportrayedtruelovesoWessexmustpayShakespeare£50,theexactamountShakespearerequirestobuyashareintheLordChamberlain'sMen.TheQueenthendirects"Kent"totellShakespearetowritesomething"alittlemorecheerfulnexttime,forTwelfthNight".

TheoriginalideaforShakespeareinLovecametoscreenwriterMarcNormaninthelate1980s.HepitchedadraftscreenplaytodirectorEdwardZwick.ThescreenplayattractedJuliaRobertswhoagreedtoplayViola.However,ZwickdislikedNorman'sscreenplayandhiredtheplaywrightTomStoppardtoimproveit(Stoppard'sfirstmajorsuccesshadbeenwiththeShakespeare-influencedplayRosencrantz&GuildensternAreDead).[1]

Thefilmwentintoproductionin1991atUniversalPictures,withZwickasdirector,butalthoughsetsandcostumeswereinconstruction,Shakespearehadnotyetbeencast,becauseJuliaRobertsinsistedthatonlyDanielDay-Lewiscouldplaytherole.Day-Lewiswasuninterested,andwhenRobertsfailedtopersuadehim,shewithdrewfromthefilm,sixweeksbeforeshootingwasduetobegin.Theproductionwentintoturnaround,andZwickwasunabletopersuadeotherstudiostotakeupthescreenplay.[2]

Eventually,ZwickinterestedMiramaxinthescreenplay,butMiramaxwasnotkeenonhimasdirector,andfrozehimoutoftheproject,choosingJohnMaddeninstead.MiramaxbossHarveyWeinsteinactedasproducer,andsuccessfullypersuadedBenAfflecktotakeasmallroleasNedAlleyn.[3]

Thefilmwasconsiderablyreworkedafterthefirsttestscreenings.ThescenewithShakespeareandViolainthepuntwasre-shot,tomakeitmoreemotional,andsomelineswerere-recordedtoclarifythereasonswhyViolahadtomarryWessex.Theendingwasreshotseveraltimes,untilStoppardeventuallycameupwiththeideaofViolasuggestingtoShakespearethattheirpartingcouldinspirehisnextplay.[4]

the"twohouseholds"ofRomeoandJulietaresupposedlyinspiredbythetworivalplayhouses).Inaddition,thetwoloversareequally"star-crossed"—theyarenotultimatelydestinedtobetogether(sinceViolaisofrichandsociallyambitiousmerchantstockandispromisedtomarryLordWessex,whileShakespearehimselfispoorandalreadymarried).ThereisalsoaRosaline,withwhomWillisinloveatthebeginningofthefilm.

ManyotherplotdevicesusedinthefilmarecommoninvariousShakespeareancomediesandintheworksoftheotherplaywrightsoftheElizabethanera:

theQueendisguisedasacommoner,thecross-dressingdisguises,mistakenidentities,theswordfight,thesuspicionofadultery(or,atleast,cheating),theappearanceofa"ghost"(cf.Macbeth),andthe"playwithinaplay".
