JeromeKernbeganhiscareerasasongwriterintheatersinLondonandNewYorkCity.Successcamequickly.Bytheearly1920s,KernwasasuccessfulyoungcomposerforBroadwaymusicalcomedies.Inonethree-yearperiodalone,hewrotemusicfornineteenshows.OneofKern’sbest-lovedsongsisSmokeGetsinYourEyes.AlthoughKern’ssongsareeasytorememberafterbeingheardafewtimes,theyarenotsimple.Hissongsarealwayscreative,evendemanding.AnexampleisthesongAlltheThingsYouAre.
