Ananalog-to-digitalconverter
Ananalog-to-digitalconverter(ADC)isusedtoconvertacontinuouslyvariablesignaltoacorrespondingdigitalformwhichcantakeanyoneofafixednumberofpossiblebinaryvalues.Iftheoutputofthetransducerdoesnotvarycontinuously,noADCisnecessary.Inthiscasethesignalconditioningsectionmustconverttheincomingsignaltoaformwhichcanbeconnecteddirectlytothenextpartoftheinterface,theinput/outputsectionofthemicrocomputeritself.
TheI/Osectionconvertsdigital“on/off”voltagesignalstoaformwhichcanbepresentedtotheprocessorviathesystembuses.Herethestateofeachinputline,whetheritis“on”or“off”,isindicatedbyacorresponding“1”or“0”.Intheanaloginputswhichhavebeenconvertedtodigitalform,thepatternsofonesandzerosintheinternalrepresentationwillformbinarynumberscorrespondingtothequantitybeingconverted.
