Questions41to45arebasedonthefollowingpassage.
September23,2011
DearDiary,
Thisafternoon,MrJenkinsaskedmetostayforafewminutesafterclass.HetoldmethatnextweekisDeafAwarenessWeekandthatwewouldbediscussingitinclass.He'salreadyplannedseveralactivitiesandlectures,but,forobviousreasons,healsowantedmetomakeaclasspresentation.
Istaredathimindisbelief.HowcouldIpossiblymakeapresentationtotheentireclass?
Iwaspetrified.Ididn'twanttodoit,andItoldhimso.Hewasdetermined,though.Hereallythoughtitwouldbeagoodopportunityformetosharemy"culture"(hisword)withmyclassmates.Thatgotmethinking.DoIhaveauniqueculture?
I'veneverthoughtaboutitlikethatbefore.
Iwentstraighttothelibrarytodosomeresearch.Whatmakesdifferentculturesrecognizableanddistinct?
Iknowthatlanguageiswhatdistinguishessomanycultures.ImaybedeafbutIstillunderstandEnglish.Yet,IdoutilizeaformofEnglishthatnoteveryonecanunderstand—AmericanSignLanguage,orASL.OnceIrealizedthat,IimmediatelylookedforbooksaboutASLsoIcouldlearnmore.
SoonafterThomasGallaudetgraduatedfromYaleUniversity,hewascommissionedtohelpteachAliceCogswell,thedeafdaughterofawealthylocaldoctor.GallaudettravelledtoEurope,wheredeafeducationhadbeeninexistenceforalongtime,tostudycommunicationamongdeafpeople.HemetLaurentClercinParis,recruitedhimtohelpdevelopdeafeducationintheUnitedStates,and,in1817,thetwofoundedtheAmericanSchoolfortheDeafinHartford,Connecticut.
LaurentClercbeganteachingAmericanstudentstheformofFrenchSignLanguagewithwhichhewasfamiliar.However,manyofthestudentsatthenewschoolwerealreadyusingtheirownuniqueformofsignlanguagethathadindependentlydevelopedintheircommunities.Overtime,andwithextensiveuse,thevariousformseventuallyevolvedintowhatwenowknowasAmericanSignLanguage.
Signlanguageisalmostexclusivelybasedoneasilydecipherablehandmotionsthatrepresentspokenwords.Sincedeafpeoplerelyheavilyontheirsenseofsight,thismethodofcommunicationislogical.BodylanguageisextremelyimportantinASL,andsubtlemovementsoftheeyebrows,mouth,orfingersoftenindicateconnotationsthataretypicallyrepresentedbytoneofvoiceinspokenlanguage.
Interestingly,thereisstillnouniversalformofsignlanguagethatisreadilyunderstoodbydeafpeoplearoundtheworld.Indeed,thoughpeopleintheUnitedStatesandGreatBritainspeakEnglish,AmericanSignLanguageandBritishSignLanguagearedistinctlydifferentand"speakers"ofeachformwouldnotbeabletoeasilycommunicatewithoneanother.
Youknowwhat?
I'mnotsoscaredtomakethispresentationtomyclassnextweek.Infact,I'mactuallylookingforwardtoit.MaybeI'lleveninspiresomeofmyclassmatestolearnASL!
