Oneobviousreasonisthatit’sjusttwolineslong.Thepoem,whichcanbeunderstoodas“Amanseesabunchoffacesinthesubwayandthinkstheylooklikeflowersonatreebranch,”isanexerciseinshortness.PoundwroteitafterhavingaspiritualexperienceinaParismetro(subway)station.
In1916,theUSpoetoriginallythoughthecouldbestdescribehisvisioninapainting.Unfortunately,hewasn’tapainter.Sohewroteathirty-linepoem,whichhedidn’tlike.Hedroppedthelongversioninthewastebin.Sixmonthslater,hewroteashorterpoem,butdidn’tlikethatoneeither.Finally,afullyearaftertheexperience,hehadbeenreadingshortJapanesepoemscalledhaikus,andhefiguredhewouldtrythisstyle.Theresult,whichwaspublishedin1913,isoneofthemostfamousandinfluentialworksinmodernpoetry.
Thispoemisoneofthemonuments(纪念物)ofthe20th-centuryartisticmovementknownas“Imagism”.Basically,Poundandhisfriendsthoughtthatimages(意象)weren’tjustdecoration:
theywerethehighestformofspeech.Byfindingtherightimage,thepoetcanexpressthetrue,spiritualrealityofathing,whichismoreimportantthanusingabunchofadjectivestodescribeitsphysicalappearance.Thus,“InaStationoftheMetro”isapoemthatconsistsofoneimageexpressedwithabsolute(绝对的)exactnessandnothingelse.
