“Whenyouhaveakidwhoisstruggling,thelastthingyou’rethinkingofiscleaningthehouse,”saysGregg.
Thefamilytraveledtomanycitiesintheirjourney,includingAlbuquerque,Denver,KansasCity,Chicago,andBuffalo.Thetripcovered6,500miles.“It’sbeenamazingtowatchmyownchildrenopentheireyesandseethattheworldisbiggerthantheythink,”hesaid.“Eventhelittlekidsarelearningfromthisexperience.”
Andthefamiliesthey’vehelpedfeelblessedtohavemetthem.“Theyshowedupat8a.m.andwehadalistofthingsweneededhelpwith,”saidJimSpencer,a61-year-oldfatherinWarren,Michigan,whose12-year-olddaughter,Lexi,wasdiagnosed(诊断)withcanceracoupleofyearsago.

Theresearchersused66volunteerswitharangeof(一系列的)musicaltrainingandtestedtheirabilitytohearcombinations(组合)ofnotes(音符)todetermineiftheyfoundthecombinationsfamiliarorpleasing.Theyfoundthatpeopleneededtobefamiliarwithcombinationsofnotes.Iftheycouldn’trecognizethenotes,theyfoundthenotesdissonant.Thisfindingputanendtocenturiesoftheoriesclaimingthatphysicalfunctionsoftheeardeterminewhatwefindattractive.
Thestudyfoundthattrainedmusiciansweremuchmoresensitive(敏感的)tounpleasantnotesthannon-musicians.Whentheycouldn’tfindthenote,themusiciansreportedthatthesoundswereunpleasant,whilenon-musiciansweremuchlesssensitive.Thisshowstheimportanceoftrainingornurturing(培养)thebraintolikeparticularsoundofcombinationsofnotes,likethosefoundinjazzorrock.
Dependingontheirtraining,astrangechord(和弦)soundwaspleasanttosomemusicians,butveryunpleasanttoothers.Thisshowedusthateventheabilitytohearamusicalnoteislearnt.
