F.ScottFitzgerald,bornonSeptember24,1896,anAmericannovelist,wasoncea

studentofSt.PaulAcademy,theNewmanSchoolandattendedPrincetonUniversityfor

ashortwhile.In1917hejoinedthearmyandwaspostedinAlabama,wherehemet

hisfuturewifeZeldaSayre.Thenhehadtomakesomemoneytoimpressher.

Hislifewithherwasfullofgreathappiness,ashewroteinhisdiary:

“Myown

happinessinthepastoftenapproachedsuchjoythatIcouldnotshareitevenwith

thepersondearesttomebuthadtowalkitawayinquietstreetsandtakedownparts

ofitinmydiary.“

ThisSideofParadise,hisfirstnovel,waspublishedin1920.Encouragedbyits

success,Fitzgeraldbegantodevotemoretimetohiswriting.Thenhecontinuedwith

thenovelTheBeautifulandDamned(1922),acollectionofshortstoriesTalesofthe

JazzAge(1922),andaplayTheVegetable(1923).ButhisgreatestsuccesswasTheGreatGatsby,publishedin1925,whichquicklybroughthimpraisefromtheliteraryworld.Yetitfailedtogivehimtheneededfinancialsecurity.Then,in1926,hepublished

anothercollectionofshortstoriesAlltheSadYoungMen.

However,Fitzgerald'sproblemswithhiswifeZeldaaffectedhiswriting.Duringthe

1920shetriedtoreorderhislife,butfailed.By1930,hiswifehadherfirst

breakdownandwenttoaSwissclinic.DuringthisperiodhecompletednovelsTenderIstheNightin1934andTheLoveoftheLastTycoonin1940.WhilehiswifewasinhospitalintheUnitedStates,hegottotallyaddictedtoalcohol.SheilaGraham,hisdearfriend,helpedhimfighthisalcoholism.
