GravitationalwaveswerefirstobservedinSeptember2015andtheseconddetectionoccurredthreemonthslater.Thethirddetection,whichtheastronomerscalledGW170104,wasmadeonJanuary4,2017.Theastronomersbelievedtheirlatestfinding“providescluesaboutthedirectionsinwhichtheblackholesarespinning”.

“Blackholesarebeautifullysimple.Youjustneedtwonumberstodescribethemcompletely:

mass,howmuchtheybendspacetime,andaspin,howmuchspacetimemovesaboutthem,”saidDrChristopherBerryoftheUniversityofBirmingham,oneoftheresearchersintheproject.“Butittakeslotsofhardworktomeasurethesefromourdata.Wenowhavewonderfulmassmeasurements,andarestartingtouncoverdetailsaboutthespinsoftheseblackholes,whichcouldgiveevidenceforhowtheyformed.”TheresearcherssaidtheirdiscoveryaddedfurtherevidencetosupportEinstein'sgeneraltheoryofrelativityandconfirmedtheexistenceofpreviouslyunknownblackholes.
