ManyAmericansandinternationaltouristsmakeaspecialvisittoWashington,D.C.,inthespringtoseethebloomingpinkandwhiteJapanesecherrytrees.ThetreeswereoriginallyplantedasagiftfromthepeopleofTokyo,Japan,in1912.In1910,apreviousdonationof2,000cherrytreeshadbeendestroyedbecauseoftheinsectproblem.Eachspring,theNationalCherryBlossomFestival,atwo-week-longcelebration,attractstensofthousandsofvisitorsfromaroundtheworldtoseethemagnificenttreesinfullbloom.
