Abstract:
Domesticationandforeignizationaretwostrategiesintranslation,withregardtothedegreetowhichtranslatorsmakeatextconformtothetargetculture.Andthedisputesoverthechoiceofthesetwostrategiesalwaysgowiththetranslationpractice.However,domesticationandforeignizationbothusedbyonetranslatorforonetextisnotcontradictorybutcomplementary,justaswhatLinYutangdoesinhisEnglishversionofSixChaptersofaFloatingLife.ThisthesiswillgiveabriefanalysisofdomesticationandforeignizationtranslationinLinYutang’sSixChaptersofaFloatingLifebyanalyzingdomesticationandforeignization,translationconceptofLinYutang,andLin’sattitudetowardSixChaptersofaFloatingLife.

两种翻译策略的分歧也随着翻译实践一同发展。
不过,正如林语堂翻译的《浮生六记》,两种翻译策略也可以在一位译者的一部作品中同时使用。
本文通过对归化与异化策略,林语堂的翻译原则,以及林语堂对《浮生六记》的体会等方面的研究,简要分析林语堂林语堂英译《浮生六记》中的归化与异化策略。

Ⅰ.Introduction
LinYutang(October10,1895–March26,1976)wasoneofthemostsuccessfulChinesewritersandtranslatorsinthe20thcentury.HisinformalbutpolishedstyleinbothChineseandEnglishmadehimoneofthemostinfluentialwritersofhisgeneration,andhiscompilationsandtranslationsofclassicChinesetextsintoEnglishwerebestsellersintheWestSixChaptersofaFloatingLifeisoneofthem.
SixChaptersofaFloatingLifewaswritteninQingdynastybyanauthornamedShenFu.Itisanautobiographicalstorymixedwithobservationsofandcommentsontheartofliving,thelittlepleasureoflife,somevividsketchesofsceneryandliteraryandartcriticism.SixChaptersofaFloatingLifeoccupiesanimportantpositionamongalloftheliteraryworksinQingDynasty.
LinYutang’sEnglishversionofSixChaptersofaFloatingLifebecameagreatsuccessimmediatelyafteritwaspublished.ItgainedgreatpopularitywiththereadersintheWesterncountries.TherewerequitealotEnglishreadersenjoyingreadingthebooksomuchthattheyfeltreluctanttofinishthereadingatonetime.
Recently,moreandmorepeoplestarttoanalyzeLinYutangandSixChaptersofaFloatingLife,andtheirarticlescovermanyparticularfields,suchasthechoiceofthewords,activecomplement,translationstrategy,aestheticsoftranslationandsoon.Thisthesisalsoconcentratesonitstranslationstrategy—domesticationandforeigniation.
Domesticationandforeigniation,thetwodifferentmethodsoftranslation,alwaysleadtodisputeamongtranslators.Actually,that’sthedisputeofchoosingthetargetlanguagecultureorthesourcelanguageculture.Whenabookistobetranslated,thetranslatorhastodecidewhethertoapproachthetargetlanguagecultureorthesourcelanguageculture.Lotsoffactorswillaffectthedecision,suchasthestyleoftheoriginalwork,therequirementofthetargetlanguagereaders,thetranslators’personalviewofthework,etc.
LinYutangwasborninChinaandlivedinAmericaformostofhislifetime,soheisfamiliarwithboththeChinesecultureandtheAmericanculture.InthetranslationofSixChaptersofaFloatingLife,hedidnotjustchooseonetranslationstrategy.Domesticationandforeignizationarebothusedbyhimappropriately.AndthisthesiswillgiveabriefanalysisofdomesticationandforeignizationtranslationinLinYutang’sSixChaptersofaFloatingLifebymeansoftheanalysisofdomesticationandforeignization,translationconceptofLinYutang,andLin’sattitudetowardsSixChaptersofaFloatingLife.
Ⅱ.TheStudyofDomesticationandForeignization
A.Definitionsofdomesticationandforeignization
Domesticationandforeignizationaretwostrategiesintranslation,withregardtothedegreetowhichtranslatorsmakeatextconformtothetargetculture.TherootsofthetermscanbetracedbacktotheGermanphilosopherSchleiermacher’sargumentthatthereareonlytwodifferentmethodsoftranslation,“eitherthetranslatorleavestheauthorinpeace,asmuchaspossible,andmovesthereadertowardshim;orheleavesthereaderinpeace,asmuchaspossible,andmovestheauthortowardshim”(Venuti19-20).ItwasLawrenceVenuti,anItalianAmericantranslationtheorist,whofirstcoinedthesetwotranslationstrategiesinhisbookTheTranslator’sInvisibility—AHistoryofTranslation:
adomesticatingmethodisanethnocentricreductionoftheforeigntexttotarget-languageculturalvalues,bringingtheauthorbackhome,andaforeignizingmethodisanethnodeviantpressureonthosevaluestoregisterthelinguisticandculturaldifferenceoftheforeigntext,sendingthereaderabroad.(Venuti20)
Thatistosaydomesticationis“astrategyinwhichatransparent,fluentstyleisadoptedinordertominimizethestrangenessoftheforeigntextfortargetreaders”(连,14),andforeignizationisastrategyinwhich“atargettextisproducedwhichdeliberatelybreakstargetconventonsbyretainingsomethingofforeignnessoforiginal”(连,13).
B.Thedisputesoverdomesticationandforeignization
Translationpracticehashadalonghistoryforseveralthousandsofyears.Wheneverthereisatranslationpractice,translatorsdefinitelyapplycertainstrategies.Thedisputesoverthechoiceoftranslationstrategiesalwaysgowiththetranslationpractices.Whyhavethedisputesalwaysbeengoingon?
Fromthereviewoftheargumentsoverdomesticationandforeignization,itisnotdifficultforustofindthattranslatorsalwaystendtooverstresstheimportanceofonestrategyandignoretheroleoftheother.Theywanttoproposeauniversalstrategyfromtheirownpositions.Thatiswhythedisputeshavealwaysbeengoingon.Thetranslatorswhopreferforeignizationhavegivenfivereasons:
(a)ItisnecessaryfortheTLreaderstoexposethemselvestoforeigncultures,whichisusuallytheirgoalinreadingtranslatedworks.(b)Translatorsshouldbelievethatreadershavepossessedtheintelligenceandimaginationtounderstandtheheterogeneityorforeignnessofothercultures.(c)ThetransplantationoftheSLcultureintotheTLculturewillenrichtheTLcultureaswellasthevarietyofexpressionsoftargetlanguage.(d)Translationshouldperformthefunctionofculturalexchange,whichisalsothechiefaimofit.(e)Fidelityisnotachievedunlesstranslationversionconveysallthephenomenaofthesourcelanguageandculture.(郭建中,13)
Peopleinfavorofdomesticationhavealsolistedfivereasons:
(a)TryingtoimposethenormsofSLontheTLisimpractical.Likewise,itisdangeroustoimposethevaluesystemoftheSLcultureontheTLculture.Therefore,translationworkshavetogetovernotonlylinguisticbarriersbutalsotheculturalbarriers.(b)Sincetranslatingmeans
