Abstract:

根据在翻译中所体现的目的语文化程度的不同，有归化与异化两种翻译策略。

两种翻译策略的分歧也随着翻译实践一同发展。

不过，正如林语堂翻译的《浮生六记》，两种翻译策略也可以在一位译者的一部作品中同时使用。

本文通过对归化与异化策略，林语堂的翻译原则，以及林语堂对《浮生六记》的体会等方面的研究，简要分析林语堂林语堂英译《浮生六记》中的归化与异化策略。

Ⅰ.Introduction

LinYutang（October10,1895–March26,1976）wasoneofthemostsuccessfulChinesewritersandtranslatorsinthe20thcentury.HisinformalbutpolishedstyleinbothChineseandEnglishmadehimoneofthemostinfluentialwritersofhisgeneration,andhiscompilationsandtranslationsofclassicChinesetextsintoEnglishwerebestsellersintheWestSixChaptersofaFloatingLifeisoneofthem.

SixChaptersofaFloatingLifewaswritteninQingdynastybyanauthornamedShenFu.Itisanautobiographicalstorymixedwithobservationsofandcommentsontheartofliving,thelittlepleasureoflife,somevividsketchesofsceneryandliteraryandartcriticism.SixChaptersofaFloatingLifeoccupiesanimportantpositionamongalloftheliteraryworksinQingDynasty.

LinYutang’sEnglishversionofSixChaptersofaFloatingLifebecameagreatsuccessimmediatelyafteritwaspublished.ItgainedgreatpopularitywiththereadersintheWesterncountries.TherewerequitealotEnglishreadersenjoyingreadingthebooksomuchthattheyfeltreluctanttofinishthereadingatonetime.

Recently,moreandmorepeoplestarttoanalyzeLinYutangandSixChaptersofaFloatingLife,andtheirarticlescovermanyparticularfields,suchasthechoiceofthewords,activecomplement,translationstrategy,aestheticsoftranslationandsoon.Thisthesisalsoconcentratesonitstranslationstrategy—domesticationandforeigniation.

Domesticationandforeigniation,thetwodifferentmethodsoftranslation,alwaysleadtodisputeamongtranslators.Actually,that’sthedisputeofchoosingthetargetlanguagecultureorthesourcelanguageculture.Whenabookistobetranslated,thetranslatorhastodecidewhethertoapproachthetargetlanguagecultureorthesourcelanguageculture.Lotsoffactorswillaffectthedecision,suchasthestyleoftheoriginalwork,therequirementofthetargetlanguagereaders,thetranslators’personalviewofthework,etc.

LinYutangwasborninChinaandlivedinAmericaformostofhislifetime,soheisfamiliarwithboththeChinesecultureandtheAmericanculture.InthetranslationofSixChaptersofaFloatingLife,hedidnotjustchooseonetranslationstrategy.Domesticationandforeignizationarebothusedbyhimappropriately.AndthisthesiswillgiveabriefanalysisofdomesticationandforeignizationtranslationinLinYutang’sSixChaptersofaFloatingLifebymeansoftheanalysisofdomesticationandforeignization,translationconceptofLinYutang,andLin’sattitudetowardsSixChaptersofaFloatingLife.

Ⅱ.TheStudyofDomesticationandForeignization

A.Definitionsofdomesticationandforeignization

Domesticationandforeignizationaretwostrategiesintranslation,withregardtothedegreetowhichtranslatorsmakeatextconformtothetargetculture.TherootsofthetermscanbetracedbacktotheGermanphilosopherSchleiermacher’sargumentthatthereareonlytwodifferentmethodsoftranslation,“eitherthetranslatorleavestheauthorinpeace,asmuchaspossible,andmovesthereadertowardshim;orheleavesthereaderinpeace,asmuchaspossible,andmovestheauthortowardshim”（Venuti19-20）.ItwasLawrenceVenuti,anItalianAmericantranslationtheorist,whofirstcoinedthesetwotranslationstrategiesinhisbookTheTranslator’sInvisibility—AHistoryofTranslation:

adomesticatingmethodisanethnocentricreductionoftheforeigntexttotarget-languageculturalvalues,bringingtheauthorbackhome,andaforeignizingmethodisanethnodeviantpressureonthosevaluestoregisterthelinguisticandculturaldifferenceoftheforeigntext,sendingthereaderabroad.（Venuti20）

Thatistosaydomesticationis“astrategyinwhichatransparent,fluentstyleisadoptedinordertominimizethestrangenessoftheforeigntextfortargetreaders”（连，14）,andforeignizationisastrategyinwhich“atargettextisproducedwhichdeliberatelybreakstargetconventonsbyretainingsomethingofforeignnessoforiginal”（连，13）.

B．Thedisputesoverdomesticationandforeignization

Translationpracticehashadalonghistoryforseveralthousandsofyears.Wheneverthereisatranslationpractice,translatorsdefinitelyapplycertainstrategies.Thedisputesoverthechoiceoftranslationstrategiesalwaysgowiththetranslationpractices.Whyhavethedisputesalwaysbeengoingon?

Fromthereviewoftheargumentsoverdomesticationandforeignization,itisnotdifficultforustofindthattranslatorsalwaystendtooverstresstheimportanceofonestrategyandignoretheroleoftheother.Theywanttoproposeauniversalstrategyfromtheirownpositions.Thatiswhythedisputeshavealwaysbeengoingon.Thetranslatorswhopreferforeignizationhavegivenfivereasons:

（a）ItisnecessaryfortheTLreaderstoexposethemselvestoforeigncultures,whichisusuallytheirgoalinreadingtranslatedworks.（b）Translatorsshouldbelievethatreadershavepossessedtheintelligenceandimaginationtounderstandtheheterogeneityorforeignnessofothercultures.（c）ThetransplantationoftheSLcultureintotheTLculturewillenrichtheTLcultureaswellasthevarietyofexpressionsoftargetlanguage.（d）Translationshouldperformthefunctionofculturalexchange,whichisalsothechiefaimofit.（e）Fidelityisnotachievedunlesstranslationversionconveysallthephenomenaofthesourcelanguageandculture.（郭建中，13）

Peopleinfavorofdomesticationhavealsolistedfivereasons:

（a）TryingtoimposethenormsofSLontheTLisimpractical.Likewise,itisdangeroustoimposethevaluesystemoftheSLcultureontheTLculture.Therefore,translationworkshavetogetovernotonlylinguisticbarriersbutalsotheculturalbarriers.（b）Sincetranslatingmeans
