Inthe1880s,MarTwainmanagedhisownpublishingcompany.Healsobecameinterestedinvariousinvestments(投资),especiallyaindoftypesettingmachine.Helostalmost$200,000ininvestmentsinthemachinebetween1881and1894.Also,hispublishingcompanydeclaredbanruptcy(破产)inApril1894.Thus,inJanuary1895,MarTwainfoundhimselfpubliclyshamedbyhisinabilitytopayhisdebts.

Althoughhewasrecoveringfromhisfinancialproblemsby1898,MarTwainhadbeguntoeperiencetragedy(悲剧)inhispersonallife.Suy,hisoldestdaughter,diedofmeningitis(脑膜炎)in1896,whileherparentsandsisterClarawereabroad.In1903,MarTwainsoldthebelovedhouseinHartford,whichhadbecometoocloselyassociatedwithSuy’sdeath.Hiswife,Olivia,whohaddevelopedaheartcondition,diedonJune5,1904.Hisyoungestdaughter,Jean,diedonDec.24,1909.
