Clearly,wedonotknowexactlyhownumerousindustrieswillevolve.Anditisalackofadvancedknowledgethatispromptingmuchspeculation.Intheareaoffinancialservicesforexample,somepredictthatmanyofChina'sdomesticbankswillhavealimitedlifespanoncethemarketisfullyopenedupinfiveyearstime.//

Weofferanopenandsuccessfuleconomy.Wearetheworld'sfifthlargesttradingnation,andprobablythemostinternationalinorientation—soagreatplaceforChinesecompanieswishingtodevelopinternationalcompetitiveness.Wearethesecondlargestinvestoroverseas.WearetheleadingEuropeaninvestorinChina,with3,400jointventuresandnearlyUS$20billionincontractualinvestment.Totakearecentexample,Bookham,theBritishopticalcomponenttechnologycompanyhasjustacquiredanewfactoryinShenzhen.//

Crucially,Britainisalsothesecondlargestrecipientofinwardinvestmentintheworld.ThatmeansthebestcompaniesfromaroundtheworldchooseBritaintobasetheirinvestmentsinEurope,andtohelpintheirglobalresearcheffort.//

HowcanallthishelpChinesecompanies?

First,wehavelearntthatinvestmentoverseas—the"goingout"policyinChina—bringsenormousbenefitstotheparentcompanyandtoitsownhomeeconomyovertheshortandlongterm.Wehavethelongestexperienceasacountryinhelpingnewinvestorstosucceedwithprofit.//

Second,weknowhowimportantitistochoosetherightcountrytoinvestinonthebasisofobjectivecriteria.Themostimportantcriterionisthejudgmentofinternationalbusiness,andinternationalbusinesshasshownclearlyitsownpreferenceforBritainasthelocationofchoiceinEurope.//

About40%ofAmerica'sandJapan'smassiveinvestmentsinEuropegotoonesinglecountryoutofthe25nationsthatmakeuptheEU—toBritain.TheconsensusfromtheChinesecommunitiesinAsiaisevenstronger.70%ofHongKong'sandTaiwan'sinvestmentinEuropegoestoBritain,and50%ofSingapore's.OnlylastmonthHuaweiofShenzhencelebratedtheinaugurationofHuaweiUK.Thisimportantinvestmentproject,creating200newjobsoverthenextthreeyears,isthelargestChineseinvestmentmadeinBritaintodate.//
